Who Is That Carrying the Olympic Torch?

by Employee ‎06-25-2012 05:40 PM - edited ‎06-25-2012 09:13 PM

I spent some time this weekend watching the Olympic trials and was once again amazed at the talent and skill on display by the many competitors seeking to represent our country in London. I also felt incredibly out of shape and unaccomplished.] I would be remiss, however, if I didn't give a shout out to one of our own.

Congratulations to Gemma Whitman, a Verizon employee from the U.K. who has been selected to carry the Olympic Flame for Verizon on July 21!

Gemma was nominated by Verizon employees in the U.K. to carry the torch because of her tireless commitment to charities and community groups in Reading, U.K.

The nominations highlighted Gemma's work helping the homeless at night, handing out food and offering support and friendship. They also noted her volunteer work at the Reading Festival and her involvement with Christian Aid, youth groups and other charitable organizations.

Among the comments made by employees were: "Gemma is an absolutely fantastic person, not only brilliant to work with but also makes a difference on the streets of Reading," and, "She's fun, she's happy, she's helpful and caring and deserves a thank you...she would LOVE to carry the torch for Verizon."

Verizon has a strong culture of volunteerism. We applaud Gemma and will be watching proudly. To learn more about Verizon Volunteers, visit http://www.verizonfoundation.org/employee-retiree/verizon-volunteers-program/
