by ‎04-29-2011 04:02 PM - edited ‎04-29-2011 04:04 PM

weston.JPGEditor’s Note: Mike Weston, director of product development for Verizon Enhanced Communities, blogs from this week’s Broadband Properties magazine summit in Dallas, an annual gathering of managers and developers of apartments and condominiums.  Mike reports that one of the big themes from this year’s summit is that residents are looking for quality broadband and wireless connections when selecting a place to live.

After spending three really good days in Dallas – minus the wildfires and tornadoes – with multi-family and technology professionals at the Broadband Properties magazine summit, a few themes and trends stand out for me:

Customer Feedback Makes the FiOS Guide Even Better

by ‎04-28-2011 12:53 PM - edited ‎05-02-2011 08:41 AM

brian.JPGEditor’s Note: Today’s guest blogger, Brian Roberts, has been the Creative Lead for the FiOS TV Interactive Media Guide from its inception. The Interactive Media Guide is the navigation system (that includes search, browse and menu options) for all content available on FiOS TV. Brian has had the time of his life working intimately with partners in marketing, development and usability to bring each release of the Interactive Media Guide to life and into customers’ homes.  Above all else, Brian is a consumer and technophile and is told that he is addicted to “things that plug in.”

By Brian Roberts

Designing for the FiOS TV Interactive Media Guide is literally about making millions of people happy.  We know that FiOS TV customers will have to use it to navigate an ocean of entertainment every day, so we strive to provide an unobtrusive and delightful experience that will appeal to the majority.  We want customers to feel excitement and pride about their technology choice while others are green with envy.  We would never get the experience right in a million years without putting the customer first and understanding their expectations, needs and wants of the entertainment service that they put their trust in.

There’s no getting around it.  More Americans are getting grayer and grayer.

The Baby Boom generation – those Americans born between 1946 and 1964 -- continues its inexorable march toward official senior-citizen status, with estimates that the number of Americans over the age of 65 will blossom to about 70 million by the year 2030.

Technology Connects, and Disconnects, Us

weekly_RoundUp_AtHome.jpg

Live-music fans who couldn’t get to this year’s Coachella festival in California were in luck last week, as YouTube streamed webcasts of all 61 bands’ performances on three stages over the three-day event.  More than 4 million people tuned into the webcasts to see acts like Arcade Fire, Kanye West, The Stokes and dozens of  less well-known bands hoping to attract their own followings.  This CNET News story goes into details about how the YouTube webcasts benefitted fans, the bands, and the music industry.  I have to wonder, though, if this means there will no longer be a cachet around attending a major music event.  If you can’t brag that you were there, because 4 million people were “virtually there” as well … then what fun is that?  Would you rather be in the crowd and seeing the bands up close and personal, or enjoy the event from the comfort of home?

Customers Join Verizon’s Innovation Nation With Gusto

by ‎04-21-2011 04:50 PM - edited ‎04-21-2011 04:50 PM

verizon_brick.JPG

At first glance, many Verizon buildings look like rather traditional brick and mortar facilities.  But wander inside one of our concept centers, customer experience labs or a research and design hub, and you’ll find that it’s home to many of the industry’s brightest minds and sharpest thinkers.

Their workday is all about delivering you the types of services that simplify life; make life fun; and help you stay connected with the people and places most important to you.

But here’s the kicker.  All of our visions of sleek applications, widgets and tools to make your broadband and entertainment experience second to none would not happen without your input.  That’s right – you, the Verizon customer – are members of our innovation nation, and we’re grateful.

It's All in a Day's (Tele) Work

by Employee ‎04-20-2011 03:51 PM - edited ‎04-20-2011 04:49 PM

Editor's note: Verizon Chief Sustainability Officer James Gowen blogs about the increasing popularity of telework and the surprising results of a study of Verizon employees who worked from their home offices. This post was also featured on the Verizon Business Think Forward blog.

Remember when uttering the phrase “teleworking” was guaranteed to be shot down by your boss, and the thinking was that you had to be in a traditional office to be productive?

Fast forward to today. How many people do we see conducting business anytime, anywhere, on multiple devices – living and working on their terms? The lines have become blurred in this borderless world where we can be as productive while on the coffee line as we are at our desks.

Verizon Report Looks at Cybercrime

by Employee on ‎04-19-2011 04:44 PM

wade.JPG

Editor’s note:  Verizon today (April 19, 2011) published the "Verizon 2011 Data Breach Investigations Report," an annual study about cybercrime.

Wade Baker, Verizon director of Risk Intelligence and principal author of the report, answers questions about its findings and recommends five steps that consumers can take to protect their data online.

Q:  For those that aren’t familiar with the report, what is it?

A:  It is an annual study into the world of cybercrime that analyzes computer forensics to uncover how sensitive data is stolen from organizations, who’s doing it, why they’re doing it, and, of course, what might be done to prevent it.

Verizon Customer Wins $10,000 in Great Paper Escape Sweepstakes

by Employee ‎04-19-2011 02:34 PM - edited ‎04-19-2011 02:43 PM

Scranton, Pa., is well known to fans of the TV show “The Office” as the home of the fictional paper-supply company, Dunder Mifflin.

Today, I was in Scranton to announce the winner of the $10,000 grand prize in Verizon’s wildly successful Great Paper Escape sweepstakes, which encouraged our residential customers to enroll in paperless billing.  It’s a pretty good bet that the employees of Dunder Mifflin would not have been pleased with our campaign.

The grand-prize winner, Antony Tolano, a Verizon customer from nearby Tobyhanna, was randomly chosen from more than 1.5 million sweepstakes entries submitted.  He plans to pay some bills with his winnings and save the rest.

86524989 (1).jpgWe spend a lot of time here talking about FiOS Internet and TV and for good reason.  However, there are still millions of households served by Verizon that choose between either Big Cable or our High-Speed Internet (also known as digital subscriber line) service delivered over our  robust copper network.

Today, we’re making that choice a lot easier for those of you not in areas where we offer FiOS.  Our new High Speed Internet bundle offers for new Verizon High Speed Internet customers have been loaded with more value, simplified in terms of structure, and we’ve removed both contract and early-termination requirements from Verizon’s services.

weekly_RoundUp_AtHome.jpgLet’s begin with a moment of silence for the beloved Flip camcorder, which was killed off by Cisco this week.  If you’re a Flip owner, like me, the always helpful Maggie Reardon at CNET has done some digging for us about how we will, and perhaps won’t, be able to use our Flips in the future.  I intend to keep using mine.  Will you keep using yours?

Now some happier news.  Easter and Passover are upon us.  If you’re looking for new ways to enjoy these special holidays … well … there’s an app for that. In fact, there’s a lot of apps for that, along with great websites too – as Bob Tedeschi outlines in this week’s Personal Tech section of the New York Times.

weekly_RoundUp_AtHome.jpgThe time of year is here that fills us procrastinators with dread.  Yes, April 18 is next week, people.  Luckily, CNET News has come to the rescue with a video showing some good tips about filing your tax return statements online so you can get that monkey off your back quickly (and get your tax refund faster, too).  Or check out the Verizon Room to Learn for other ways to make Tax Day easier.  Have you filed your taxes already?  Or do you do them online now every year?

If you or someone you love is ready to file for Social Security benefits, you can do that online too.  The trick is to convince people who may not be comfortable with technology that this is an easy and safe thing to do.  The Social Security Administration has enlisted some celebrities “of a certain age” to help get seniors onboard with electronic filing.

espn (1).JPGThese days, it seems that more people are watching TV programming on everything but their TVs.  Do you know about all that you get as a Verizon FiOS customer?

First we made TV programming available online in 2005.  Then we expanded by offering certain programming on mobile devices with Verizon Wireless V CAST service and, more recently, FiOS TV’s Flex View.  And, in the last year we’ve expanded FiOS TV Online to include everything from HBO, EPIX, TNT and TBS to live streaming of CNN.

It may have been overcast and dreary in Landover, Maryland, last Friday but the future looks bright thanks in part to the dedicated group who gathered to hear President Obama’s inspiring discussion about clean vehicles.

As the president highlighted, transportation accounts for more than 70 percent of America’s oil consumption.  It is also one of the biggest costs for many businesses and families.

Spring cleaning time is here and, according to the New York Times, you might want to consider tossing some of your gadgets out with the rest of your clutter.  I’m totally onboard with some of their suggestions – like ditching the point-and-shoot camera.  I’m using my smartphone now more than ever to take great pictures and post them up on Facebook with the touch of a button.  They also suggest hanging onto your alarm clock.  Big amen to that.  I can’t ever seem to correctly set my smartphone alarm.  One suggestion I can’t get behind is favoring books over e-readers.  Just this week, while flying from New York to Dallas, I read half of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on my tablet.  The brightly-lit, big type was amazing to behold.  And, as far as the Times blogger suggesting that I ditch my pay TV?  Never! What gadgets are you ready to send to the Goodwill store?
