Just over eight years ago, I stood in the middle of a homeowner association park in FiOSCity #1 - Keller, Texas- just outside of Dallas.  Surrounded by more than 200 reporters, consumers, elected officials, equipment suppliers, union leaders and Verizon colleagues, I watched the future unfold as we conducted our first public demonstration of FiOS.

To the sound of “oohs” and “ahhs” and sight of wide eyes, we showed how we could shoot pulses of light over hair-thin strands of fiber optic lines to deliver huge chunks of digital information, paving a new era of connectivity for consumers.

Halfway through the FiOS unveiling, you could have heard a pin drop as one of our executives explained that we would soon be introducing what back then was deemed ultra-fast broadband of 5,15 and 30 megabits per second (Mbps) downstream speeds.

We’re back for our second installment of the new “What To Watch” blog. As I told you last week, we’re planning to give you a look at some of the country’s favorite shows and sporting events airing during the coming week.

Smart thinking and quick moves prevented a potential disaster in Saranac, N.Y. as a bus driver carrying 25 school children suddenly turned ill and was unable to drive.

Three Verizon field technicians were heading to their next job, driving behind school bus #196, when they watched with growing alarm as the bus swerved in increasing arcs across the road.

They immediately took action, and a scary situation for a busload of students could have turned from bad to worse had it not been for one brave student and three Verizon technicians. No students were harmed and the bus driver, who was taken to a nearby Medical Center, is doing well.

It’s that time again! Time for me to tell you all about the free programming available to you as a FiOS TV customer.

The first one is a bit different than our usual free previews. Starting today, we have a special premiere available on demand. Season six of the popular HISTORY Channel show "Ice Road Truckers” begins on June 3^rd (9 pm ET), but we have the premiere episode right now on FiOS TV Video on Demand – 10 days before it airs! For anyone not familiar with the show, “Ice Road Truckers” follows a group of drivers who operate trucks on routes to remote oil fields crossing frozen lakes and rivers in Canada and Alaska’s arctic conditions.

And, If you missed last Wednesday’s Twitter chat with Damon Lindelof, you missed a rare treat, or in this case, a Tweet. Lindelof is one of the writers of the highly anticipated upcoming Ridley Scott movie “Prometheus,” which opens worldwide on June 8. Hope, anticipation and excitement filled the air as some teachers, students and administrators from Health Sciences Charter School in Buffalo, NY gathered yesterday morning in their computer lab.

My team had sent word that I was in town and wanted a meeting to review their grant application.  I was surprised to see so many people gathered in the room as I was the one who had wanted to surprise them.

The "meeting" wasn't real -- I specifically made a visit to this school with Jennifer Cadiz from Samsung to share the wonderful news that Samsung will donate 80 mobile tablets so they can be a part of the Verizon Innovative Learning School (VILS) program.

FiOS TV scored a trifecta today as the results of the latest American Customer Satisfaction Index survey results revealed our fiber-optic based video service led all competitors in overall customer satisfaction for the third consecutive year.

The latest customer recognition for FiOS TV comes amid a broader report by the ACSI, which also showed steady results for Verizon’s wireless and wireline voice services.

Just as our customers are satisfied with FiOS TV, we are also particularly pleased with the video services results of the latest ACSI survey that’s based on a national survey of about 70,000 consumers annually.  The ACSI measures customer satisfaction in 47 industries, and the measurement index was originally developed at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business.

It’s always great to be favorably recognized.  When a big tip of the cap comes (like it did this week) from the public at large, however, the honor is all the more humbling and meaningful.

It’s not every day that a large base of consumers rates your flagship service - in this case Verizon FiOS - as the nation’s highest rated and widely available TV, Internet and phone bundle provider in a nationally recognized third-party consumer publication.

FiOS Internet, first offered in August 2004, recently surpassed the 5 million customer mark (that’s a 36 percent penetration in areas where service is offered).

Like many of you, watching TV shows and movies online has become a great alternative when my big screen TV isn’t an option. Like when I’m traveling…or when my toddler is insisting on watching another episode of Nick Jr.’s “Bubble Guppies” and I want to see the latest episode of “Glee.”
