Let’s face it – a night at the movies can be expensive. The average price for a movie ticket in the U.S. is $7.89. Where I live, that’s the price of a child’s ticket – adults are $10 each. My family often turns to Video on Demand for a more cost-effective movie night, in the comfort of our own home. And now FiOS is making it even less expensive with FiOS Movie Night.
Every Friday, beginning today, Verizon will make three movies available on demand at the discounted price of $2.99 each, many of which will be offered in HD. Today’s movies are “Secretariat,” the true story of Penny Chenery Tweedy and her stallion who set the record for winning the Triple Crown; “Red,” about a former CIA agent played by Bruce Willis; and “Takers,” about a group of bank robbers that includes two of my personal favorites – Matt Damon and Paul Walker. All three of these movies are offered in both SD and HD for just $2.99 each.

As you probably know, FiOS TV Video on Demand offers more than 19,000 monthly titles, including hundreds of new releases. If you’re looking for something for the kids right now, check out “Despicable Me,” “Shrek Forever After,” “Alpha and Omega” or “Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2.”

If you have teens and tweens at home, I’m sure you’ve already heard about the next big Disney Channel movie, “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.” The film, which stars the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato, premieres Sept. 3 on Disney Channel. But FiOS subscribers get a sneak peek two days earlier, when the movie will become available on VOD.
We’ll be joined this weekend in the New York City area by two newcomers to the movie, Chloe Bridges and Matthew “Mdot” Finley, pictured here, who will be signing autographs.

In Texas tonight, Verizon will be doing maintenance on FiOS TV starting at 11:00 PM. That will help assure FiOS TV is the best service possible, but also it will cause video-on-demand (VOD) service to be unavailable between 11:00 PM and 8 AM tomorrow. We’ll be doing this in every FiOS TV market around the country over the next month, so, if you’re not in Texas, keep a look out for when the maintenance will be done in your area.

FiOS TV customers wanted more detailed program information, interactive video-on-demand (VOD), more shortcuts and easier ways to upgrade their FiOS TV, and I’m happy to say the folks in the FiOS lab have come up with some pretty neat responses. Starting now in Texas and California and rolling out in every FiOS market over the next few months, we’re upgrading our Interactive Media Guide to make on-screen purchasing and FiOS TV navigation faster and easier than it has been. With the upgrade, customers can check out the original airing date of a show and cast, along with genre, director, detailed description and more. In an age when programs run more than once and when many folks use DVRs to watch favorite programs regularly, this should make it easier to know whether or not you’ve seen an episode.
