Is there anyone at Verizon that can reactivate my email account so I can retrieve the contents of my mailbox. I am supposed to have access for 30 days but was denied access the day after I cancelled my DSL online service?

Whoever told you Verizon would leave your email active for 30 days lied. When you cancel your account, they disable it. You *might* be able to get them to temporarily reactivate it so you can download your content, but they are not obligated to do so.
Contact Verizon via one of the options on their Contact Us page, and ask nicely if they'll enable it just long enough for you to get your email. (This is a peer-to-peer support forum, not many actual Verizon employees on here.)
