Re: Email reply, forwarding etc

[ Edited ]

Sorry, Justin, but it *is* that bad.  Things work one time and don't the next, buttons appear and disappear, earlier my 'refresh' was invisible, tho the option was there in hovertext if you knew where to hit.  Also, in the view tab for a message, the reply/reply all, etc buttons were missing, though they are back now.  Either it wasn't properly QA'd with various browsers or something.  I'd be fired if I released something this poor for public consumption.

Not to mention we pay for this service, a lot.  Any paid service should have no ads on the page to clutter it up.  Or at worst an option to opt out of them permanently.  And by the way, the hide ad arrow as missing earlier as well, thought it's back nowl.

Also, the junk filter is a joke.  I have one sender constantly end up in spam, tho I've marked them repeatedly as no spam.  And senders I mark as spam keep coming to my inbox.  And BTW, who decided that 'stu.pid' is a bleepable word in these forums?  Really?  Grow up.

And to top it off, they spring changes on us with ZERO notification of what was changed, how to do things in the new interface, etc.

Sorry, but they need to fire whoever decided this was a good interface and was ready for release.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree.

I am not a big fan of webmail in general, but for me the Verizon webmail interface works just as well as those from AT&T, Nortex (a small local ISP), and Gmail do (I have accounts on each), on Firefox, IE, and Google Chrome (tried them all just now, Verizon webmail worked just fine on all). Why do you and I have such a different experience with this? I may not use it as frequently as you do, only once or twice a day for me, but still, it is consistent, works the same every time.

How much do you pay for the webmail service? I have no idea how much I pay, it is just buried in the internet portion of my bill I guess, but I suspect it is really a very small part. After all, I don't need to use Verizon's webmail, I can use pretty much any webmail or client I want to access Verizon email services. So even if they did not offer webmail it would not bother me, I would just use Gmail or something in addition to Windows Live Mail. Plus since it is so easy to eliminate the ads from all of Verizon's web interfaces, I don't see the big deal here (go to AT&T's webmail interface, you will see ads on the right side there). Just block them, and they become a non-issue - why not?

And for me, the junk/SPAM filter works very well. I have 8 or 9 filters defined, they catch 100% of the things I want caught. And I get anywhere from 3 to 20 SPAM emails a day, it catches about 98% of them.

Now, one thing you and I apparently agree on completely, is Verizon's making changes without warning, or not providing instructions for new or changed stuff. They have been doing it since I got FiOS 5+ years ago, email, TV, web interfaces, you name it. They really need to change that philosophy.

Re: Email reply, forwarding etc

Justin - My, you are certainly defending this very defective program.  Perhaps you work for the company?  I have been in the computer field since 1975 -- IBM and Digital (DEC) --and have never seen such amateurish work.  I used att for many years, they offered superior and very reliable service.  I switched only because my coop made a special deal for a bulk rate with verizon.

Has anyone noticed that when  you start reading messages, that there is no next or previous buttons?  You only see the next message when you delete the current message.

Also, it is impossible to move messages to the Draft folder, which I often did to edit content and send the edited message on to others. And it is not even possible to edit messages in the draft file.

The answer is: Nothing. Verizon does not charge for their email product, they're not in the email business. You pay for internet, and email is a "freebie." Many people argue about this EVERY time I post it, but it's Verizon's perspective. If you agreed to never use their email, they would not lower your bill. You are not forced in any way to use verizon.net email in order to use their service. It's an extra, not a core product.

Why is this accusation aways made? "He's saying he doesn't have any problems with <blank>, and I am having problems! He must work for the company!!!!"  By that logic, we could just as easily say you work for the cable company, because you're saying that you have problems and we don't. Why is it so difficult to just accept that it's working for some people, but not for others?

Perhaps because his signature says he works for verizon?  Also, if it's working for some and not others ... sorry, but that is defective design and a poorly tested release.

Every ISP I know provides email as part of their internet service, we pay for the total service, including email and web space.   The issue here is that a major ISP has a very poorly designed email product -- and they touted the original rollout as an improvement on the old one, which it wasn't.  Surely an ISP and web content provider should have a clue how to design, implement, and test a decent webmail interface *before* they roll it out as in 'improvement'.

Maybe you're seeing something different than I am in Justin's signature. This is what I see:

That's his name, a list of the Verizon services he has (FiOS TV, Internet, and phone), the DVR model/version he has (QIP6416-P1, IMG 1.8, Build 02.54), and his location. - All fairly commonly requested on these boards.

I really believe that "somegirl" is the voice of reason on this forum.  You Go Girl!!!

I think that whether or not you have problems could well depend on the version of windows you are running or the browser you are using.  Most times, when I have a problem, it is only a problem on one of my computers.  One runs IE8 and Xp and the other runs Vista and IE8.  There is also a chance that the server you are on has a problem  I usually report my problems to"Feedback" and they do fix them, or here on the forum where the very nice people here help me.

I suppose it is hopeless to continue this dialog, but to try just one more time....

1) I do NOT work for Verizon, never have, don't have any Verizon stock, no financial interest at all in Verizon, but I do have two friends that have been laid off by Verizon, do you think that colors my view of Verizon webmail? As for my background, gee, I went to work for IBM in 1967 as an SE, took the ITO II (if you know what that stands for) in 1992, worked for an IBM Business Partner for 10 years, then decided it was time to relax. I spent 2 - 3 years working in IBM Development, in Germany and Poughkeepsie, testing software, developing software testing procedures, writing and reviewing IBM manuals, etc. I have seen lots of far more amateurish work, from IBM and elsewhere, for both mainframes and PCs, for fee and free, than the Verizon webmail interface. And one more time, I have an AT&T email account, and I find their webmail interface no better (and no worse) than Verizon's.

As Somegirl was kind enough to point out, I include the information describing my environment in pretty much every post, so that the viewer can see what services I have, etc. I wish more people would do that, it would help tremendously, because many don't bother providing even the basic information that would help all of us who volunteer here to better answer their questions.

2) No Next or Previous buttons? Well, here is what I see:

VerizonMailNext.jpg

Very clearly there are Next and Previous buttons, although they are greyed out unless there are multiple messages in the Inbox.

3) Move messages to Draft? If you are talking about messages in your Inbox, you are right, I can't do it either. But I have never had a desire to do that, so at least for me that is no issue.

4) And finally, ok, you think the Verizon webmail interface is terrible, then why continue to use it and be so unhappy? Just get a Gmail account (free), add the Verizon email account to that, and then use the Gmail interface. Or switch to Gmail completely. Or install a client, like Windows Live Mail (free) or Thunderbird (free).

Obviously I am not going to change your mind, and you are clearly not going to change mine. But for others who might read this thread, honestly, from my view, the Verizon webmail interface works, and works pretty well, as well as the webmail interface from other ISPs that I have used.

I hope you can find a solution that satisfies you.

And here is my non-Verizon-employee signature one more time.... :smileyvery-happy:
