Verizon has a lot of old Westell modems/routers still out there. If you have an older router, ports 995 and 465 are blocked, if you have the router firewall turned on. Open a browser and go to address 192.168.1.1, which will take you into the router settings. You can either turn off the firewall or port forward ports 995 and 465 to a specific computer. The Verizon tech support people were clueless on this when I called; then it hit me to check if the ports were open on the router.

This problem does not just affect Thunderbird, but many email programs. When the Verizon tech support people hear the word "Thunderbird" they shut down their brains and say that Verizon does not support Thunderbird. They don't have a pre-written script to read to you for Thunderbird. I wonder how much more it would really cost Verizon to have "thinking" tech support people.
