Ever since the most recent e-mail screen "update" (about a year ago), I have experienced a significant service downgrade. I must delete messages at least twice for them to be erased, and I have lost entire pages of e-mails which I clearly did not delete. In addition, when composing a message, the message will "dissapear" into thin air more times than not, before being automatically saved in "drafts". The service has slowed as well (I don't mean downloads).
It is definitely not the computer, since it happens both at work (desktop) and at home on the laptops. Is any one else experiencing this problem?
Don't use Webmail.
Use an email client.

We live in a rural area in Western New York where cable is not available. In the last month or so the internet service has been slow and not very reliable. Often when connecting nothing is either downloaded or uploaded. Since I frequently work very early in the morning this is to say the least very disconcerting. Perhaps a satellite dish might be a better alternative.

Your problem and TonyRPh are most likely NOT the same. The Original Poster (OP) equated "Internet Service" with email. That is incorrect. Email is a sub-service of Internet access and one can have excellent email service with poor Internet Access or one can have poor email access but excellent Internet Access/Connectivity.
Your rural NY problem relates to the actual Internet Access (connectivity) which you don't define. Verizon provides; Dial-Up Networking (DUN), aDSL and FiOS. To deal with your problem is to first define HOW Verizon provides you with Internet access. More importantly, since it does not pertain to the OP's problem, you need to post a completely new topic in a sub-forum pertaining to Internet Connecticity, not email.
Under Residential Products and Services you may find a more apropos forum such as FiOS or DSL for posting your problem.
