Enable PIP Picture in Picture Functionality

Status: Accepted
by Ktrain on ‎04-23-2011 05:47 AM

How long will we have to wait for Verizon FIOS to upgrade their existing clunky oversize "set top" boxes to allow Picture in PIcture (PIP)?  Since we are told the existing set top boxes cannot provide PIP, why not just offer us PIP hungry customers a different box, like the Scientific American's.

Its high time for Verizon to not drop the ball on this one. If the existing boxes cannot handle such a simple function that Comcast customers in my area have had for years, I will be forced to switch to Comcast to resolve this. I bought a TV with PIP functionality deliberately, like so many others have. If the digital age involves rolling back technologies, why did we switch again?

I am forced  to presume Verizon FIOS wants me to rent yet another box and split the signal before it enters my set top box,, and live with SD and a limited channel lineup and no guide. Nope. Its like we are still in the stone age. Why is there a PIP button on my remote, anyways?

Its also high time to abandon the name set top box.  If a single customer can get the set top box on top of the existing flat panel high definition TV, please post a picture so we can all get a good laugh.

But not the 1990's definition of PIP... something more sophisticated... 1,2,3,4,5,6,7.... video windows on a screens... you pick which ones... just went to a design meeting today :smileyhappy: Please jack up the vote volume.... will help me in the cause.

How about the NASA channel

How about the NASA channel(s). That one is free and you do not have to fight over rights to air it. It has only been asked for like the past three years.

It is in the content queue, but lower priority

From: http://www.satelliteguys.us/dish-network-forum/210264-tcm-hd-looks-fuzzier-than-its-8.html#post21806...

"Here is the final word from the TCM Programming Department in response to my question about their HD Content posted during a "People Behind the Network Forum" held at 15.30 hours, PDT, at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on Friday afternoon, 23 April, 2010:

TCM currently up-converts all content on the HD feed at this time and will begin to feed actual HD content to the HD feed within the year. Their initial objective was to get the HD feed in place and then, as they can acquire HD prints from the studios; HD prints for the licensed content which they own outright, and HD prints for future programming; begin to feed HD and down-convert for the SD feed.

The reason for the long lead time is that some of the rights to the films are negotiated as far as three years out. While normal programming is done between 5 and 7 months out - they are currently programming general content for September / October 2010 - special circumstances, such as significant dates in history, director or actor's birthdays, or other events can require planning as much as five years in advance."

When will TCM have their HD feed "in place" at FIOS? Hopefully before they start their Halloween programming.

TCM HD is in the channel queue, but we don't provide dates here. When we start adding it to the network, we'll change this status to "In Progress" here.

I'm disappointed that Verizon only allows you to only scan 2x the rate when you are watching Video on Demand content.

It's a different technical problem to solve for On Demand as opposed to VOD

Verizon clearly has the capability and network to stream more data/video to smartphones.  Since I can already log in to my DVR box to control recordings, why not push video that is already recorded back to my phone.  It would be one more way Verizon could stay ahead of the competition.

Status: Accepted
We do agree that you should be able to enjoy FiOS TV content from your computer or mobile phone... it may not stream from your DVR... it might stream from our network servers instead

The Cablevision and Tie Warner apps that let you stream live tv must be used within the home network.  There is no point in using that app unless you are in the bathroom or outside.  Please develop an app that lets us use the app away from our home network.

Status: Accepted
To be clear there will definitely be content that can only be watched in the home (business restriction)... but there will also be options that are available outside of the home... the ones trapped in the home will be less and less as we progress forward.

Font Options

by on ‎04-21-2011 06:54 AM

Reading the comments of 1.9 over the forums and Twitter, I see a lot of people complaining about the guides font size.  Some are saying the font is too small, and some are saying the full screen guide can fit even more if the font was smaller.  Personally, I find the font size in 1.9 to be fine where it is.

So what I propose is the ultimate solution, which WILL SATISFY EVERYONE! Why not code in and offer font size options? Other providers are currently testing font size customizations in their next-gen guide, leaving it in the hands of the customer to find their ideal font size.

And while were at it, there really should be options for almost every conceivable setting, because everyone is different and how else could you please everyone?  I know that might be a pipe dream, but it's something to strive for!

Yes and yes. This is so hard. So hard. But definitely on that mission.

Currently all Verizon DVR external storage devices are "married" to a particular home DVR.  If for any reason that DVR requires replacement, the only way to preserve content stored on the external device is to make real-time hard copies to another device such as a DVD or Blu-Ray recorder.  Judging from the many forum posts on this subject, users are not happy with this situation.

Recently I learned from another forum member that this situation was addressed by Dish in the following manner.  Originally Dish external drives were married to a particular DVR.  According to information in the forums, Dish later "divorced" the external drive from the DVR and "re-married" it to the user's account.  This means the external drive can be used to play recorded content on any DVR properly registered with the account, including replacement devices.

This seems like a solution worth investigating, particularly since Verizon has promised to release an entirely new system called Verizon Media Server.  Why not include this feature from the start?.

Thanks for the alert. I have passed this to the proper team within verizon.

Add In for Windows 7 Media Center - IPTV

Status: Accepted
by on ‎09-29-2010 10:17 AM

Currently, FiOS offers VOD, et. al. over IPTV. Can Verizon (maybe with the help of SeaChange) write an application for Windows 7 Media Center that will allow MC users to access the VOD and PPV libraries over IPTV? Yes, I know there are options like NetFlix for PPV, but if I only want to see 2 or 3 movies a year, I don't want the monthly fee if I can avoid it.

Then, when VZ begins migrating channels to IPTV to relieve the QAM space constraints, the application can then also tune in the channels that are migrated to IPTV. Imagine what one could do with the Ceton Infinitv4 + IPTV app for FiOS.

If such an app were to be created, please do not have me acknowledge EVERY time that the application is for use by Verizon Customers (like Call Assistant). Just have me acknowledge that during the install.

Over the next 2 years we expect to expand the types of devices that can access all FiOS TV (live TV, VOD, widgets, etc) content at home and on the go.

Name of Recorded Episode

Status: Accepted
by drelexgrad on ‎09-14-2011 12:10 PM

The changes to Fios which happened last night (9/13/11) are great.  When you have a recorded program on the DVR and select "Program Information", the name of the channel appears on the "Program Information" screen, but the name of the "episode", which appeared on the previous screen, does not appear.  I would like for it to be repeated.

Thanks.

Next Generation STB

Status: Accepted
by on ‎08-21-2011 08:10 AM

In summary, I would like there to be a box next to my ONT that has eight tuners, a Hard Drive, a Connector for esata, and MOCA and Ethernet ports. At each TV, there would be a small box that connects to MOCA or Ethernet and the TV. All recordings and tuning would be done by the box next to the ONT. The small box next to each TV would just receive the signals and send commands to the central box.

Advantages of this:

All TVS could see all recordings

It could support an external esata box with multiple drives

The small box next to each TV could be built into future TVs --> no more STB!!!!

The central box would have access to 8 tuners rather than the two in each current STB.

It would simplify MRDVR use since you would not need to know which box a recording was made on

It would provide a transition to IPTV - just move the central box from near the STB to Verizon

The central box would be something like a Silicon Dust HD Home Run Prime combined with a PC.

We are presented with the ability on the web to add/remove channels on your STB 'favorites'. I like that I can do it from the web rather than the STB chnnel changerr. However, It is interactive - i.e. just one channel at a time can be accomodated. It takes a few seconds each time for it communicate with the STB when one is added or deleted. The user should be presented a way to 'batch' enter a selected list of channles so that he/she doesn't have to wait a number of seconds for the STB to respond for each channle change.

Just give us a way to select a whole set of channels and perform the action to the STB just once so we don't have to wait for the STB (sometimes up to 20 seconds per each add/delete action). This operation via the web page has not been thought out and the users have to suffer this time consuming operation of adding or deleting a bunch of channels to their favorites.

Smarter DVR, Recording Sports Seasons, Recording Conflict Resolutions

Status: Accepted
by ‎10-07-2010 09:21 AM - edited ‎10-07-2010 10:04 AM

You NEED to come up with a better way to be able to record seasons of sports teams.  Why can't the DVR be smart enough to recognize a sports franchize? For example, in Los Angeles, the Lakers televise games on KCAL9, Fox Sports West, ESPN, ABC, and TNT.  Currently, I have to set up season recordings on KCAL9 and Fox Sports West.  For games on ESPN, ABC, and TNT, I have to manually setup a recording for every one of them.  God forbid if games are replayed on the same channel the next day.  When this happens, it keeps recording the replays, because for whatever reason, all the replays are marked as "new!"  If I try to set it up to record on any channel, I end up with 2 recordings of every game, because it records the SD and the HD channels of the same game!  Its unbelievable.  I should just be able to pick through a list of professional sports teams and record seasons of the teams I want, no matter what channel they are on.

Finally, why can't the DVR be smart enough to resolve recording conflicts?  My DISH DVR could do this over 5 years ago!

Good ideas. We'll work them into the roadmap for 2011.

It is so difficult to find a channel. FIOS, like other providers, insists on listing channels by number. Who gives a {please keep your posts courteous} about the number? If i need to find Sundance HD, Showtime, or YES, I want to be able to find it without resorting to this lame-**bleep** website for a decent channel line up.

GET A CLUE!!!!

I don't care if CBS is paying for better positioning in your numerical lineup.

You've got 500 channels. Please let your customers find them!!!!!

P.S. enough people told me they didn't like this idea / preferred the #'s (but wanted to pick the numbers themselves)... so it's in the eye of the beholder. But I get your point (would have without the bleeps and the CAPS).
