I received an email that my personal webspace will no longer support FTP. The email sited "security reasons" for this removal. It is true that normal FTP is completely unencrypted and probably should be removed. It is very easy to find someone's password over FTP.
However, if this decision is solely above security and not about selling business plans, why not support the SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) instead. It was designed to replace FTP for this very reason. SFTP can be viewed as an encrypted form of FTP. Linux and I believe Macs have SFTP support out of the box and Window users can download a SFTP client Filezilla for example.
I personally like to hand craft my web pages in HTML myself. I am not a fan of the site builder tool because I am a little strange and like complete control. I use Linux for this very reason. I wasn't a heavy webspace user anyway. So this isn't a great loss. However, I dislike losing something I used to have. By replacing FTP with SFTP, I and other Verizon users can create web pages in any HTML editor we wish and upload them over a secure connection with SFTP. It will be a win for everyone.
Thanks for reading my rant.

Kudos to dslr595148.
I think I'll go on and go with GoDaddy and perhaps find another ISP if I can come up with the connectivity plan ... Dish, Cable, ... what do you suggest? To help me move away from Verizon Corporate Greed.
The last poster is just turning this around onto the customer, supporting them paying more, after losing a major part of a service.
ftp loss is a major service reduction. I didn't see my bill decrease accordingly.
It made my current website usage dysfuctional, like the editing of my heated comments by ElizabethS.
Verizon's suggestion to use the onlne website builder is adding insult to injury.
Down with Corporate Greed, and Censoring Comments on Verizon Threads.
I still like FiOS and find it hard to beet. I believe if anything they are tying to boost income to keep costs down and keep customers. This way they still keep proffits. Just like when they cut USENET feeds to only Verizon groups. built this, which is good, and cut news groups completely.
I agree that they want to cut support for residential customers and force you to pay for web hosting. Anyone that wants more than just the average stamped out web site will pay more. I remember the days of DSL and restrictions on most if not all scripting that Microsoft Sitebuilder used.
I believe if anything they are tying to boost income to keep costs down and keep customers. This way they still keep proffits...
One of the things that gets some users (including me) most annoyed, is that Verizon had to lie about that.
They said FTP was insecure, and that was the reason that FTP was discontinued for PWS.
Why couldn't they just tell the truth?
Why, why?
So I'm thinking that if Verizon reimbursed my account for purchasing web hosting from a 3rd party web hosting company (such as Godaddy for $3.99) I'd be ok with that, and Verizon wouldn't have to worry about FTP access.
So..... BeckyS_VZ can you offer some insight for us customers on how to get around this issue? You are admining this forum, I am assuming you are a Verizon employee...has anyone read this thread at Verizon besides you?
I got a call from Verizon (much delayed) asking about my Web problem resulting from the stopping of FTP.
Clearly the representative had not seen the Community or Ideas bulletin board on the FTP problem. I suggested he research the problem by reading the bulletin board entries. Clearly Verizon does NOT have proper procedures for "listening" to consumer comments. Yes, I obtained another web provider and have the Verizon web site as an archival source
I just switched to Verizon and had I known that they screwed up something so simple as this I would not have switched (at least I would not have switched to Verizon). What a crock. This is what happens when you have accountants making IT decisions.
You have disabled FTP for the personal web sites. This is being painted as a "security enhancement" but if you pay $6 or more a month it is no longer a security risk per your own web site??

If you make a service inconvenient then people will stop using it. However, they will complain in many venues. Just remember that if a person is happy with a service, they might tell two to five people about it. If they are UNHAPPY, they could tell up to 100 people. I just don't appreciate being treated as if I am stupid. If this is for added revenue, just tell your customers. Don't lie to them as you so obviously done.
Add to that the fact that I cannot remove my current site and you web site builder is NOT user friendly. I learned more complicated programs with much more ease. Be assured that I have been and will continue to vent my displease in any arena possible.
