Also, I have tried calling 1-800-Verizon but haven't gotten past Mrs. Empty Voice.  She tries to transfer me but says there's no answer and hangs up on me.

Have you tried and STB autocorrection?

Thank you for asking. Actually, that was the first thing I tried, and I have tried it multiple times with substantial separation between attempts on general principles. It has not worked.
