3 Million Fios Customers Hacked! Private Info At Risk!

3 million verizon fios customers have had their private information compromised because of a hacker who hacked into the fios customer database where the hack happened on july 12, 2012 where he just released the private info of 300,000 fios customers to prove his point. The hacker who was just on his twitter page @TibitXimer just went online again to brag that he is going to be releasing the rest of the private information of anyone who is a fios customer so that means that any customer who is part of that group that was hacked is probably in real danger of having all of their personal information revealed to everyone on the internet. Verizon fios has almost 5 million customers so more than half of them have had their info stolen. For more details about the story google "verizon zdnet" where at first it was believed that he had hacked verizon's wireless customers when in fact it turned out to be fios customers. There are major security flaws that exist with verizon's network and even they did not know about the hack until the hacker started bragging about it online. Verizon better get their lawyers and the FBI to go after the guy and anyone else who helped him perpetrate that crime because if he wants he can now start to sell off the rest of all of that private info if he wants to where fios customers will not even know that some hacker has had access to all of their private info for the past six months. Now once again i will implore verizon to not go ahead with their participation in the six strikes policy where i even suggested that they not go foward with it in the share your ideas section on this website. Now that we know how easily someone can hack verizon's network it would not be that hard to pretend to be someone that you are not and start illegally downloading things off of the internet while the actual customers who had been hacked end up getting hit with fines while having movie studios taking legal action against them. Fix the security for your network verizon! When word of this spreads that private info has been compromised it will be verizon who will be on the receiving end of legal action being taken against them not their customers. Between this hack, your participation in the six strikes policy, the big brother patent application, and your compliance with the federal government where you along with sprint and other phone companies allowed the government to listen to all of verizon's customer's phone calls it really makes people wonder if you really do care about your customers. A formal apology to your fios customers and then using all of your resources to go after the hacker while also seeing to it that your customers come first no matter what is what you should be working on right now. What a great christmas present for fios customers! Their information will now be available to the higest bidder all thanks to a hacker.

This information is rather old, but still relevant.

Hi mm1, the ZDNet story is inaccurate. We take any attempts to violate consumer and customer privacy and security very seriously. This incident was reported to the authorities when we first learned of it months ago and an investigation was launched. Many of the details surrounding this incident are incorrect and exaggerated. No Verizon systems were breached, no root access was gained, and this incident impacted a fraction of the number of individuals being reported. Nonetheless, we notified individuals who could potentially have been impacted and took immediate steps to safeguard their information and privacy. Verizon has also notified law enforcement of this recent report as a follow-up to the original case.

Perhaps verizon should take a look at the file that is available online. Now i have not downloaded it but it has been confirmed where the personal info of customers have been posted online for all to see. I will not mention the websites but what i will say is that before verizon assumes that there is not much more to the story they should once again investigate it before they release statements that contradict the evidence that is out there. I heard this we value our customers and protect their privacy line before where they insisted that they had no interest in monitoring people while they were in their homes where they said that a story about a patent application was false, but when you took a look at the patent application itself you will see that the intention of verizon was to monitor customers where they can apply for that patent again real soon. For verizon to assume they know for a fact the info that is in that file and that anything else that could be leaked real soon will not be real is not something many customers should immediately assume is going to be the case. If a hacker hacked verizon then it is not safe to assume that when a six strikes policy is implemented that anyone who is accused of downloading something illegally is the one who did it.

"No Verizon systems were breached, no root access was gained, and this incident impacted a fraction of the number of individuals being reported."

Hello Jeff_M and whom it may concern,

I, as both an active customer and shareholder, have concerns with this statement and hereby request further clarifaction.

My personal information, as well as that of two close family members, residing at separate physical addresses in this area, all have had their personal information shared openly on the internet due to these events. I have personally seen these entries in the leaked data file (rk10852_042_01z_m_ezzzzed_smgi - 292,906,492 bytes) and am certain you or a colleague shall be able to retrieve my family's surname in the Pennsylvania region (You may find this in my account information.) and compare it with the known file that was released publically in the events of yesterday, Dec. 22nd, 2012.

Please, enlighten me as to how "No Verizon systems were breached", yet MY personal Verizon customer data was allowed to be stored either on A) a Verizon system or B) a non-Verizon system in a plain text format and exposed in this manner. Whether or not it was a "Verizon system", I want to know how MY data from Verizon was exposed and if/why it would be stored on a non-Verizon system if that were the case.

I await your prompt response.

Regards,

Dr. R.

Here is a great article with the official word/response from Verizon.

Some were Verizon customers, most were not. In regards to the number of individuals, the total was about 10% of what was originally reported. In answer to your question about a vulnerability: No there was not. There was no vulnerability exploited. The data posted was related to 3rd Party Telemarketer Sales Lead Lists. That issue was addressed immediately once we were made aware of the issue.

...

A third party marketing firm made a mistake and information was copied.

@Jeff_M

How is it that you admit customers were affected and you notified law enforcement if no systems were breached?  How exactly was this data made public, if VZ (or its agents) systems weren't breached?

Do you think that posters in this forum don't see your spin for what it is?

MY credit card info was stolen in August and they charged up thousands of dollars.

The bank does not know how they got the info.

I started Verizon Fios June and live in PA.

Better call me VZ.

You violated my privacy.

I need to file a fraud report and make you responsible.
