I would like to replace my old Verizon FIOS router/modem. What would be the best replacement, and what are the steps in accomplishing this? My service is Internet and phone using Cat 5 cable.

Since you have a cat5 install and do not have FIOS-TV, you can use any router you wish.
Just be sure to release your WAN DHCP address when swapping out the router.
How do I release my DHCP lease
Keep in mind that if you ever get FIOS-TV, you will need the Actiontec to provide MOCA LAN for VZ's set top boxes.
