Access: Local only ???

What does "Access:  Local only"  mean for a connection?  Lately, whenever I connect to the internet, my network connection icon in the bottom right hand corner of my laptop says "Access:   Local only".  It used to say "Access:  Local and Internet".   Funny thing is, I can connect and surf the internet fine.    When I view the network map, the map shows no connection to the internet.    I guess i shouldn't be complaining, but just trying to understand why it changed.   Any ideas?

Bump.

I'm in the same boat, except I was running my connection through a 2wire router.  First my husband's wireless laptop got the same message you did - but it still was connected to the internet.  Then, after a reboot, he lost all connectivity.  I rebooted the PC that's wired to the 2wire router and the 2wire lost internet connectivity. (I reseated the cables, rebooted, etc - no luck.  I even got a new 2wire, thinking my 5 year old 2wire was busted, but I'm still getting the same errors.)  I was able to get the PC and laptop to work by connecting the cable directly into the MI424WR router, but now we have no wireless.  Plus, I really need the 2wire for work.  They want us to connect remotely through the 2wire.

I'm wondering if this is another bad patch from Microsoft or Verizon has changed something recently.

Are you running Windows Vista? If so, I think it is a fix that Microsoft delivered recently that caused your network connection to show up that way, at least I have seen some comments on another forum that appear to indicate that.

Here is a link to a Microsoft TechNet forum posting describing this: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3752907&SiteID=17.

 Justin,

Thanks for the link.  I figured it was a Vista issue.   Not surprised.

Yeah, I worked for IBM for 25 years, for a long time they were very good at fixing one problem and creating 5 more. It sometimes looks like Microsoft has adopted that same model Smiley Very Happy

Mine goes back and forth.  The other day it showed both, but now just back to local.  Wierd, but typical Microsoft.  Still waiting for the patch, but it's not affecting my connection.

I am having the same problem both with a wired computer and wireless.

This problem does not happen with I use my laptop with a Linksys router or in a public place.

How can I fix this, otherwise verizon has to go. Some programs like automatic backups are stopping because they think I am not online.

Actiontec blames windows and verizon, and verizon seems to have no idea after speaking to a few reps. Thanks
