Actiontec MI424WR Router Revision I - Having a problem
wookiegear
Newbie

Background:
=========
I am running FIOS Triple Play service since January 6 (20 days). I have the Actiontec MI424WR FIOS N Router REV. I with the latest firmware.   Connected to the MI424WR is an Netgear WNDR4500 (via LAN to LAN connection), which serves as Access Point.   WiFi is completely turned OFF on the Actiontec.

I had Internet/Phone only package for 18 months without any problems, service downtime or slowdowns. The connection was from the ONT directly to Netgear WNDR3700 router via Ethernet. There was no Actiontec(s) used.

Issue:
=====
The problem desrcibed below is happening on my HARDWIRED PC (meaning, connected via Ethernet to LAN), so this has nothing to do with WIFI.

On four separate occasions I noticed that after running for about 48-72 hours, that the internet pretty much stops working. Some pages stop loading (cannot be found) but some do load (VERY SLOWLY), but do not display graphics, or the text is misalligned and in weird fonts.  In addition, my Outlook 2010 starts getting "stuck" in trying to retrieve email, and PING'ing sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.  Bascially, it's like my whole internet goes down, but not 100%.  Maybe 95%.

Testing:
======

Going to 192.168.1.1 (IP of Actiontec) and/or 192.168.1.26 (IP of Netgear WNDR4500) shows that both are connected to the internet. However, those same pages load  (if at all) "very slowly".

I initially thought that thep roblem may be within my PC or the Netgear WNDR4500, but I am 99% sure it is not related to either. First of all, I have been running the same build of Windows 7 SP1 for at least 6 months and I never have any problems. Additionally, when these internet issues start, the rest of the computer continues to run just fine. REBOOTING the PC (numerous times) does NOT resolve the issue.

I then went on to see if rebooting the WNDR4500 helps anything. Nada. Same issues remain.

Only when I reboot the Actiontec MI424WR FIOS N Router REV. I (running firmware version: 40.19.22) does the problem get completely resolved. This is done while the the is PC on and without any reboots. After the Actiontec goes back online, I am able to just refresh any of the "defective" webpages, and they re-load fast and looking just fine.   All of he four times I have had this happen all I needed to do is turn off and then back on the Actiontec.

This lasts for about 48-72 hours, and then the same exact problem arises.

Conclusion:
========
Something must be happening to the Actiontec that causes this scenario. By the way, the STB's work just fine during this whole ordeal.  I have checked the log file of the Actiontec and cannot find anything abnormal.

I would love to hear opinions from others, or especially if you think you had something like this happen to you.

I just can't imagine what it can be.  I do have Verzion giving me a replacement Rev. I (RED case) router later this week.  Perhaps ithe one I have is flaky.

Perhaps, it may be something about the NAT table size?

As far as I know, the Rev. I is supposed to have a huge NAT Table, around 200,000k or so before it starts choking like the OP is stating. Now, the ARM processor in the Rev. I might be a bottleneck compared to the Rev. G's Dual core CPU, but no one has really benchmarked the MIPS processor vs the ARM one yet. As far as I know, some people are trying to get a hold of some to get some servers slamming the processor. The Rev. I has apparently 128MB of RAM, which is huge for a boxed router. Now, unless the Rev. I due to a bug in the firmware isn't clearing entries, it's kinda tough to see what's going on.

I'm wondering what would appear when you run a Logging server on a PC. Leave a PC on for a few days with a logging server running, and let the ActionTec log to the PC. See if you can capture some log events during the time the ActionTec starts to develop problems. I believe the OP mentioned the Netgear slowing down too when this whole ordeal happens, even though rebooting it does not solve this issue. I'm curious what would happen if the Netgear is taken out of the equation for a few days to see if this still occurs.

By the way, if you have a Rev. I you'd like to send my way, please do so. I'd like to give it to the folks behind DD-WRT/OpenWRT to start making firmware for. I love their software and it makes the ActionTecs pure awesome.

This is actually WOOKIEGEAR writing, as I remembered my original ID and login information.

1) I did get a replacement Rev I installed and it has been running fine for the last 36 hours.   But we should wait until at least 96 hours, as that's when the problems would arise.  Will of course keep you all posted...

2)  There is a new firmware that was just released (albeit BETA) for the WNDR4500, but it doesn't look like it is addressing my issue:

Bug Fixes & Enhancements:
•[Fixed]: Guest network can’t access internet when client access main wifi network first.
•[Fixed]: can’t find DNS server.
•[Fixed]: when using fix ip, DHCP will send NAK and connection will drop and re-connect.
•[Enhancement]: improve the read/write speed for ReadyShare NTFS file system.

If I get the same issue with this replacement Rev. I, I will update my WNDR4500 to this BETA bios to see if that by some chance does help my situation.

3)  If after all that I still have the issue, only then I would be willing to try to completely bypass the WNDR4500.  The thing is that my home /  network is setup for DUAL-BAND routing (split Internet and video streaming), and the Actiontec is a single-band only.  And since this problem takes at least 3-4 days to arise, I just don't want to go in and make changes to my system setup.

4)  I would love to do that, but I don't know how.   I have looked at the log of the Actiontec, and did not find anything out of order.

5)  I also don't think it's a NAT issue, and many others would be experiencing what I am.

Once again, thank you all for the suggestions, ideas comments.  Let's hope that it was just a defective Rev. I that I initially received from Verizon.   And remember that my problems are NOT wireless related.  This happens on the wired PC.

Well, my replacement Rev I lasted for the same 48 or so hours and then the same exact problem appeared.

I have decided to flash my WNDR4500 with the BETA firmware as the next step of trying to solve my issue. It is : Version 1.0.0.103 - BETA

In the mentime, here is a copy of my Actiontec LOG file from the moment the replacement Rev I. was installed to the moment I had to turn it off/on manually to fix thing (at 9:44:05 on Feb 2). I don't see anything wrong anywhere.

I have redacted my IP address for privacy.

I am having the same problem.  I Had fios about 2 years ago and then moved.  My town recently got fios and I signed up 2 weeks ago.  Every couple of days I have had to restart the modem(Rev I) because internet slows to a crawl.  I can barely get to the router's config to reboot it.

I also am not running wireless and have a seperate access point for wireless(asus).

Silly question perhaps ... but did you turn OFF the DHCP services on the Netgear?   48 hours sounds like a lease refresh interval and if DHCP is on in two locations (router and Netgear), you might be picking up information from the wrong one and then getting into an ICMP redirect scenario.

One other thing I'd try as an diagnostic would be connect the PC directly to the ActionTec and see if the behavior changes and then last to power off the Netgear for the interval involved (with the PC connected to the Actiontec) again to see if the problem abates.   This will allow you to eliminate the Netgear and it's configuration as a source of the issue or confirm that there is something likely screwy with the configuration.

When the slowness occurs, what is the result of an "ipconfig /all" on the PC?

You should take a look at this thread. Maybe it will help: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r26774144-Actiontec-MI424WR-Router-Revision-I-bug-problem-

Someone else had a very similar issue to you with the same exact hardware!

Were you ever able to find a solution for this?  I have the same set up and am experiencing the same problems.  The problem is also exactly the same when I only use the Verizon router without the Netgear router.

Sorry for the double post - I have the MI424WR rev e router you originally experienced the problem with.  It is 3 years old.
