I configure the Actiontec MI424-WR modem/router with all ports stealth (verified
by the Gibson Research Shields Up probe). Later, the same test reveals that all
ports are closed, but unstealthed. The only difference is that port forwarding
has been remotely reconfigured to allow forwarding on any port to any port (remote
administration is disabled). According to Verizon FIOS tech support, Verizon
doesn't remotely reconfigure the modem. The IP address shown, on the Port
Forwarding page of the router's firewall configuration menu, for the Networked
Computer/Device is that of the STB, and the Protocols shows "Verizon FIOS
Service." We surmize that, when the STB and router reestablish communication, the
STB reconfigures port forwarding to include the FIOS services (necessary for
program info, VOD, DVR?). The settings are not editable (at least not from the
Port Forwarding page of the router's firewall configuration menu). I would really
like to keep the ports stealthed. Why has this happened and how can I prevent it?
