Actiontek M1424WR won't work with Vizio Internet TV

I have a new Verizon Actiontek 1424 router that works perfectly with all my computers and printers. However, 98% of the time my new Vizio XVT55 will not pick up my LAN. On rare occasions it will identify it. I've read about wireless adaptors, adding a second router, antenna boosters...and I am lost. I know it isn't a distance issue as a laptop works perfectly in the same location as the TV.  I suspect it has something to do with the fact that the TV is wireless-N compatible and my router is wireless-G. I realize the easiest solution I to replace my router with a new Wireless N, buy then I'll have no tech sup-[portwith Verizon. All I know is I bought an expensive TV specifically to download movies and haven't seen a single one in five months! I'm not a computer geek but I can follow instructions! Help!

Just about all wireless variants of 802.11 are backward compatible, I.e. and 802.11n router will in fact support 802.11b and 802.11g devices.  And just about all 802.11n devices can operate as 802.11g or 802.11b. So that probably isn't the problem.

The Actiontec however isn't the world's best wi-fi router, and depending upon antenna orientation on both the TV and the router, your mileage may vary.

You may also want to try putting the Actiontec on another channel.(you can do that in the Wireless setup of the Actiontec). I believe it defaults to channel 11, and you may or may not have an interference issue there. The band used for Wi-Fi is unlicensed, and there are other uses of that spectrum such as cordless telephones. So you might try channels 1 and 6 (IIRC) and see if they work any better.

If you TV supports it, the best bet is an ethernet cable between the TV and the router. That bypasses the multitude of potential wireless issues and will always give you the maximum available speed.

The channels is a great first step, and usually will clear your problem.

Also consider that the actiontec router gets its internet connection over the coaxial cable.  That means that you can technically move it physically into any room that has a coaxial cable, and move it closer to your TV, so that you can simply hook it up with ethernet.  Ethernet hardwired hook up is the best for video streaming, so you may want to consider this option.

you would just need a two way 5-1000 mhz splitter (available online or at radio shack or a similiar electronics store) and simply connect the two way splitter to the coax cable coming into the room.  on the other side of the two way splitter are two coax outlets, one will go to the cable box as it does today, the other will go to the actiontec router, and then you'll need an ethernet cable to plug from the tv directly into one of the numbered actiontec ports.

that will give you the best most stable connection to the TV and it's internet aspects,

Also take a look at this

Can I get an ethernet connection in a room with only coax?

It describes moca bridges   If you can find a NIM 100 on ebay, those are super inexpensive and easy to use, but hard to find.

the new version of the nim 100 is the actiontec ecb2200 or hme2200 - they are literally plug and play.

you can always bridge a 2nd actiontec but that requires a lot of configuring, and you mentioned you weren't super technical so I Think you should stick with the MOCA Bridges

Dear Karenshome,

I see the new TV has been a good investment to you. Your situation has solution, That is why I want to share the information with you, You are right about compatibility between the router(b and g) and your vizio wifi(n), well the answer is:

You can connect a router n to your router actiontec via ethernet, the cable goes from any lan port in your actiontec

to the internet port in the router n, prices start from $27 to up.

then just configure the router n just for your tv Vizio,(SSID AND PASSWORD)

Unless both routers have the same ip, there are no problem to surf for the net your tv will look for the network name of the router n and the other devices like pc, etc can use your actiontec.

My brother has the same configuration(different brands) as you and is working good.

Let me know what happened
