When I was out running today I saw a FIOS tech unspooling some cable at the back of his truck. So I stopped to ask him if he had any N routers, and he said that's all Verizon used. I told him this was not so, and that I had an old G router and would like to swap it for an N one. He said fine, he'd be happy to do that. And guess what? He actually did!!
Now I don't mean to flap my wings too much about this, but I had given up trying to get an N router to replace my old (Rev. C) G model. GIven up after about 2 years of trying everything under the sun. And I do mean everything - including buying my own N router and attching it to the old G one via cable.
But this tech was just spectacular - when I gave him my old router & power supply he gave me a box with a brand new Model I (as in i) unit. He told me he'd be happy to do the DHCP release for me but I told him I knew how to do that. Well it turns out I wasn't able to do the DHCP release myself (still not sure why that's the case), but a quick call to the Verizon support line fixed that.
So now I can retire my separate N router. After all this time. Amazing!
PS: the tech told me that he's been trying to get "his people" to do a better job with tech support - as he said, "We have the best service on the planet, so now all we need to do is get our tech support in line." I said I agree, and ask him why no one was listening to him. His answer: "Probably because they don't give me million dollar a year raises."

+1 for the tech. Glad to see they're still out and about being awesome.

I am amazed that we are amazed when someone just does their job! Sort of says something about today's work force doesn't it?
