You can get the batteries for the ONT online or at a local store that sells them. They go for $15-20 typically. If you know where the battery is on the ONT, find out what type of battery it uses and simply replace it with the same type. For now if you wish to stop the beeping, just disconnect the battery from the ONT. It should continue to work for as long as you have it plugged into AC Power. It may not, in which case you connect the battery again.

IIRC the ONT Battery is a 12 volt 7 amp hour (AH) Sealed Lead Acid battery. Most metropolitan areas have at least one battery specialty store, like Batteries Plus, that are likely to have this type of battery in stock. You can also often find them available on eBay for under $20 including shipping.. These batteries are often used in home alarm systems, so they are fairly common.

However you should measure the terminals on the battery, because there are two common connector sizes or bring the battery with you when you go shopping. Sealed Lead Acid cells are sealed, so even if it tips over, it won't leak.

Life expectancy is up to 5 years, however these batteries do not tolerate complete discharge very well, so if your power is out for more than about 8 hours, the battery is probably toast no matter how old it is.

Also keep in mind that all the Battery backs up is the telephone connection for the ONT, so if the power is out, your TV and/or Internet Service will be down unless you have a UPS for the ONT. ONT power requirement  maxes out at about 25 watts, so the smallest UPS you can find will be big enough.

So,if I pull the battery in order to compare with a new one my Internet will shut down...or am I reading that wrong.

We don't have FIOS TV only internet and phone service

No, as long as the power supply is plugged into the wall and AC power is available, All ONT services (TV, Phone and Internet) will continue to operate with or without the battery present..

IF the power goes out, the Battery will ONLY provide telephone phone service for up to 8 hours, however the battery does not back up the Internet or FiOS TV service. In other words if the AC fails, only the telephone works from the battery backup.

If the AC fails while the battery is not present, your phone service will fail, but if the AC power remains on, ahd the power supply remains plugged in, it will work just fine without the battery.

So am I correct that if I only have internet service there is no benefit to keeping the BBU in service?

The battery backup only operates telephone service during an AC power interuption, so if you don't have telephone service via FiOS, then there is no benefit to keeping the BBU in service. However keep in mind the BBU is also the power supply for the ONT. So you can ignore the battery warnings, but the BBU must remain supplied with AC power for your Internet and/or FiOS Television services to work.

While the BBU doesn't keep the internet/TV up and running during a power outage, it does hold power to the ONT itself.   So, there is benefit to having the BBU in operation even if you don't have phone service -- as it will allow your ONT to ride thru those momentary power blips and recover instantly rather than having to wait for the ONT to reset and power up again.

Me personally ... I use a small UPS to power the ONT ... keeps everything running even during a brief power outage since the ONT can't see that the power went out.   My router and all my computers and the STB and TV in the family room are likewise on their own UPS units.   As long as power at the other end of the fiber doesn't go away, my connection keeps running when the power blips.
