MSN premium was actually officially discontinued about 18 months ago. It is no longer officially supported by microsoft. Microsoft is just now forcing Verizon to get customers off of that software now. This is because Microsoft is going to start with updates and other patches that are going to break MSN premium, and they are trying to prevent calls and repair requests.

At least this is what Microsoft told me when I had problems with MSN premium last year. They forced me to "upgrade" (what a laugh) to Windows Live.

This is typical of Microsoft. They get a product that FINALLY works like it should, then they discontinue it.

I  know things have slowly gone down hill. Started with parental controls then Encarta.....

I hope our msn.com Emails will still work with hotmail and outlook connector. We have had these Email addresses for 8+ years. Perhaps it is time to change. When the Verizon Email would not work right and took days for mail, I could always rely on Microsoft believe it or not. I guess I could use Gmail but I like my privacy.

MSN Premium is sooooooo 2004. I didn't even know people still used it. I had it with Verizon DSL back in January-April 2004. Do people still use AOL too?

MSN in general was part of Microsoft's whole ".net" movement waaaaay back in 2001. Fact is, Microsoft has been going to Windows Live for about four years now. Besides, what is the point of having an extra "browser" like this anyway? IE or Firefox is the way to go in 2010.

That is odd about the emails though. Even when I left Verizon DSL for Charter in May 2004 (when I moved, it took a month for VZ to realize DSL wasn't available in my area), my @msn.com emails still kept working (and still do - I never used my Charter mail or my FiOS mail).

Oh, and priasz...Encarta? I didn't even know that was still around. I don't think I've used Encarta in a decade. Wikipedia is where it's at. 😉

So, in reading this announcement, my biggest surprise is that some people actually PAY for MSN (since they say they will switch you over to a pay customer if you want). I really enjoyed having access to MSN Premium when they were running the MLB live broadcasts a few years ago and our free Verizon accounts got us free access to those broadcasts. Sadly that went away after one year, and I haven't bothered with MSN since then.

I will have to mention this to my father since he has Verizon DSL and does use MSN for email.

It is very odd that I have never received a notice. But not surprised since I moved my account to FIOS from DSL. The records are probably messes up. It says 2004, but I believe that is when my account moved. I had MSN before that.

There is very good information regarding what to do with mail. If you log into hotmail at least once a month your msn.com email should stay active on hotmail. Not sure if it will stay msn.com or go to hotmsil.com. Mine currently works with my msn.com address and password on hotmail. I have outlook connector that connects and stores may mail in outlook. It works ok now but is rather slow. Outlook connector seems to download all messages everytime it connects, or take much time to sync. I could set it to headers only, but want the messages stored locally in case I lose the account.

Not sure if windows live will stay active. Microsoft and Verizon made an attempt to get people to sign up for windows live, and stopped offering msn a while back. I guess the relationship is ending all together. Parental controls moved to live a long time ago. I have had all my msn email addresses since 2004 and don't want them to go away. I use verizon as my primary.

What happens if I don’t sign-up for an MSN Subscription by May 25, 2010?

The subscription will expire and your account will be converted to a free Hotmail account which will require you to sign-in at least once every 30 days to ensure your account does not expire. You will no longer have access to your locally stored emails in the MSN Premium client. You will no longer have access to your address book or favorites that are stored in your MSN Premium client. You will no longer have access to the McAfee® AntiVirus Plus - MSN Edition or Webroot® Spy Sweeper for MSN that is included with MSN Premium.
