Ok, this problem is starting to get old fast. It's affecting web surfing and online gaming about 4x/day. Symptoms are that connectivity to some sites dies while other sites work. Outage lasts for about 2 minutes. Interestingly enough, during the last outage I could get to www.opendns.com just fine, while www.verizon.com was unaccessable. I'm having trouble understanding how OpenDNS was accessable, as this is a traceroute to it during the outage:

Traceroute has started…

traceroute to www.opendns.com (208.69.38.160), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets
 1 192.168.3.1 (192.168.3.1) 0.755 ms 0.419 ms 0.238 ms
 2 l100.phlapa-vfttp-90.verizon-gni.net (71.244.110.1) 8.490 ms 9.448 ms 7.230 ms

 6 0.so-4-0-0.xl1.pao1.alter.net (152.63.54.81) 91.960 ms 108.521 ms 90.165 ms

19 65.203.37.46 (65.203.37.46) 88.822 ms !X * 89.098 ms !X
etc…

A traceroute to www.verizon.com did not get a response from hop 2 (!!!!). I am at a loss to understand how the router loop above at 65.203.37.46 would allow for traffic to pass to www.opendns.com, but it did. Perhaps an IP guru can make sense of this. I've cced this message to the Verizon forums as well.

The above traceroute is unaltered even when connectivity is good.

Some word that Verizon is working on this problem would be appreciated.

Addendum to above post. Here we are 2 hours later, and the same kind of outage occurred.

Here's a traceroute to www22.verizon.com during the outage:

Traceroute has started…

traceroute to e3.g.akamaiedge.net (96.16.80.29), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets

Here's the same traceroute once www22.verizon.net is again accessable:

Traceroute has started…

traceroute to e3.g.akamaiedge.net (96.16.80.29), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets

I am experiencing the same thing.  I have also changed DNS servers and done DHCP release and renew a couple times on the router.  some sites load fine, some you get to a page within the site and it just stops.  some times the site will not load at all.  it 10:11PM EST right now I can't get to newegg.com but have been there several times today just fine.  I also can VPN into work and all sites work fine.  if I drop the VPN the problem comes back..  We are in laurel, MD.  it has been going on for at least a week maybe more but it seems to be getting worse.  I havent called since I havnt had the time to sit on hold for that long yet but tomorrow I should have time.

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r23505937-northeast-FIOS-Cant-get-to-some-sites-periodically-others~... found this as well seems odd that they are also in laurel, MD and having the exact same problem.  also I dont use the actiontec router that came with Fios so that probably leaves that out of teh equation.

Rexwest:

I'm also having the same problems, and I too live in Laurel, MD.  I've had a Verizon tech out to my house, and I've been in touch with the tech's supervisor by e-mail.  The last thing they told me was they thought it was an Apple OS problem, and I should contact Apple.  However, when the tech was here he hooked up his laptop (with windows) to my router and had the same problems I was having.   He gave me a new router, but still have problems.  I also have a netbook with Windows 7, which experiences the same problems as my Macs (desktop and laptop).

I've had FIOS internet service for about 10 months, and it's been great, until about a week and a half ago.  I just e-mailed the Verizon supervisor with links to this forum posting and the DSL Broadband forum which you found which has another Laurel resident in peril.  Since it's the week between holidays, I'll let all this go until next week, but will let you know if I hear anything.

I don't anticipate any news on the issue until next week, but will post here if I get any.  I'll give the Verizon supervisor a call next Monday afternoon if I don't hear anything by then.

I'm having trouble accessing a variety of websites, including my Verizon homepage, my Verizon.com account page, washingtonpost.com, even amazon.com.  Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.  I've noticed that a lot of pages won't fully load.  Lately I've also had trouble updating podcasts through Itunes.  Technology is great until it doesn't work properly, then it just drives you crazy.

Still working on this issue hope to have resolved by early next
week.

Here's hoping all of our problems get solved.
