Conflicting IP Address with STB and Wireless Printer fixed

This is just a heads up to anyone who may have a similar issue: after just getting our FIOS (coax) modem installed along with 3 FIOS TV Set Top Boxes (STBs), I was having a terrible time trying to consistently connect to our wireless all-in-one printer from our computers, even though I was sure the IP address was right in the printer ports.  Sometimes they would recognize the printer and print fine, and other times they could not connect to the printer at all.

I FINALLY figured out that one of our STBs had the same IP address as our wireless printer!  After changing the printer address and corresponding printer port address in our computer printer properties, everything works fine.

Isn't this something that the installation technician could verify when he installs the router and STBs, to make sure they don't conflict with existing IP addresses?  It sure would save us non-geeks numerous hours of troubleshooting and frustration!!

Was the Wireless Printer receiving an address from your Router via DHCP or did you have it configured with a Static Address ?

I have noticed that my ActionTec Router assignes a dedicated pool of DHCP Addresses for the STB's from 100 to 150.  If the printer had a Static Address in this range it could explain the problem.

G2Jim,

The router will not automatically assign the ip address that are reserved for the stbs to any other devices connected. It is not something the installing tech would check for because it is not something that would happen unless a 'non-geek' set up your wireless printer with a static ip address to begin with.

It was indeed configured with a static IP address, and was connected at the time the STBs were installed.  It would have been a nice service for the tech to check for conflicts, but I can understand that would be a service over and above the bare minimum required, and especially for these sub-contractors, time is money.  Personally I like companies that actually care about customer satisfaction knowing that satisfied customers mean referrals and repeat business, and go the extra mile to make sure everything's working well before they high-tail it out.
