Connection took a dump.

Hello everyone, I'm a Verizon FiOS customer and until recently have had great connection and speeds, but recently my Ventrilo ping is normally 10, but spikes up to 2000~30000 and any games I try to play online lag intermittently as well.  I have some ports forwarded for Warcraft III, but I've had them for a while and they never made the connection slower.  I am connected wirelessly and used to maintain a 54mbit connection, now it will randomly drop to 24mbits and sometimes 12mbits.  I've renewed my IP numerous times hoping to get some better speeds, as well as releasing then renewing.  My TCP settings are standard, no modifications have been made, and the router is pretty much standard settings as well apart from the ports being forwarded.  What could possibly cause a dramastic drop in speeds?  There is one other computer on the network that is directly connected, but it's rarely used so I don't think it's the other computer sapping up bandwidth.  Any ideas?

Go to this page http://www22.verizon.com/residentialhelp/generic/fios+internet+generic/fios+connection+wizard/123494...

and click on Fios connection wizard which is the Vz in Home Agent and download the software. You can click slow internet and it will try and fix your issue.

I already tried it, and it seems like it may have helped a little bit, I also did the Verizon FiOS TCP Optimizer as well, but still no luck

First thing that I would do would be to verify that the speeds to your home have not been compromised.  Hardwire your laptop and run a few speedtests, make sure everything is good to the router.  If your speeds aren't consistent with what you have ordered, let me know.  If they are good hardwired, it's possible that your wireless speeds have dropped.  There are many possible causes for that: increased interference, lost router configurations, firmware updates, etc.

I probably should have mentioned this before - I have a desktop computer, so hardwiring is impossible unless I go buy 100 feet of ethernet cable, which isn't really in my budget right now considering I just registered for classes.

100 ft 12$ CAT6 cable, theres other ways such as powerline networking and coax-ethernet bridges but they're both expensive compared to that.

Well, I just tried playing a game, and my ping was 600+, and also my Ventrilo ping spiked upwards of 10000, I'm just going to have to call Verizon tomorrow to have them send out a tech, because this is ridiculous.  I'm maybe 10 feet (through the THIN ceiling) away from the router itself (even though Verizon specifies that the ActionTec is only supposed to go 6 feet), and until recently literally nothing has changed on my PC, and out of nowhere after a storm the one night, my connection has been unpredictable, slow, and laggy.  I don't think there's anything on my side that's causing the problem.

There could be other devices causing interference with your wireless connection that would drop down you speeds.

Have you tried to change the wireless channel to 11 ?

Have you tried to change the wireless mode to G Only from Mixed ?

Have you tried changing the type of security that you are using ?

These are only a few things that you could try.

Normally Wireless Connectivity Speed is not guaranteed by Verizon or any other provider.

Before you get too deep into this the one thing that would help most is to get a tracert so we know what we are dealing with.

With Windows

go to the cmd prompt and type   tracert www.yahoo.com

This will give us an idea if it is internal or external. You can also replace the yahoo with what ever web site you want or even your gaming server.

Now as for the wireless going from 54Mbs to 26 and so forth, this is usually due to the signal dropping. Depending on the age of your wireless system (both router and adaptor) and the type of adaptor being used (USB or PCI), it could be interfearance or age. As wireless systems get older they get weaker. Espcially with the USB style adaptors.

Spacedebris has a very good point here. I had a wireless pci adpater in my wife's desktop and she complained continuously about performance and connectivity. The nagging  Smiley Happy got so bad that I got my old NIM-100 out and hooked her up wired. But when I take my laptop to the same location (60 ft or some from the router), same router, same settings in the router, the signal strength shows excellent and the laptop never loses connectivity.

One more example of the kind of things that can happen. I have had FiOS internet over 4 years, and Verizon originally provided only a simple wired router for free, so I had my own Belkin wireless router daisy-chained from the Verizon router. When I originally got my laptop it was talking to the Belkin router just fine. Then about a year ago I got the Actiontec router from Verizon and started using that only. Laptop continued to work ok. Then I screwed up my laptop (I did it myself) and when I re-installed Windows, the laptop would connect to the Actiontec, but would lose connectivity frequently, reconnect, disconnect, over and over. I finally went to the Intel website and downloaded the latest drivers for the wireless adapter in the laptop, and I have not had a signal issue of any kind since then.

I guess the net is, it is not always the router that is causing wireless signal problems, other parts of your network, plus outside interference, can cause issues also. Of course your mileage may vary....
