Disconnect/Reconnect every few minutes

I just had Fios installed 4 days ago.  I've got a M1424WR wireless router.  Firmware up-to-date, 2 computers one wired one wireless. and every few minutes I'm disconnected from the system and reconnected.  Almost every web site has to be reloaded 2-3 times until there is a response.  The Verizon Tech phone support didn't see anything wrong with the service or router.  As a matter of fact, 6 lights are lit on the router and when this happens they generally don't go yellow or go out.  It just looks like the connection to the router is fine.  I've rebooted the router, even rebooted the back up power.  I have a feeling that there is just a setting somewhere that needs to be changed.... anyone have any ideas?  For reference, it's a lenovo laptop, IBM build.  I'm desperate to get this resolved as it's impacting my work.

If you're hardwired to the router, then it could possibly be the network cable,  you would likely see a notice on your PC when you disconnect that says "media disconnected"   YOu can try one of a couple things,   so you can change the port in the back of the router,   if you're in 1, then move it to 2, 3 or 4.  Or try changing the LAN cable.   you are sometimes left TWO lan cables from the install, a yellow and a white one.   Try changing them out.

If you're WiFI then it could be a problem in the environment in your house and that router, so changing the channel might be of some relief for you

open a web browser

use the address http://192.168.1.1

VZ usual password/user combo is admin for the username and password1 for the password

On the first column of information, you'll find a link saying "Change wireless settings" click that

go to option 3 I believe, and use the channels.   ONLY 1,6 and 11 are valid so start by changing the automatic to 11.

SAve the settings

and try your connection.

If that fails or the problem is persistent then try channel 6, next  and channel 1 as a last resort, making sure to apply the changes each time.

Remember there are all kindsa things that can interfere with a wifi signal so if you have any cordless phones near the router, or microwaves, or anything that emits EMF, then try to move it away from the router.

I have seen similar issues with laptops. Generally it was because the laptop was turning the NIC off to save power. You might want to try opening the network connections right clicking the NIC and choose properities, click the configure button, go to the power management page. THis is the power management for the NIC and either both boxes should be checked or no boxes checked. I generally just to the check marks out.

I think small tiny nat tables manifest themselves with different symptoms.    don't quote me on that, but I am pretty sure they have slow sluggish non existent responses.    If he is literally showing disconnect/reconnect, it will likely be a different issue.

if I were a betting man at least....

Well, you have two computers. one wired and one wireless.

Do both of them drop connections or just one of them? If both, do they drop at the same time?

If it is just one of them, then I'd look at the connection itself or the computer. If it is both, then I'd look at the router or verizon network.

Assuming it is both. You've already rebooted the router, did you try resetting the router also? Also try reseating the wan cable to the router as well. If your still having an issue at this point. I would call tech support back and ask them if they can pull up the history log on the ONT. This will hopefully tell them if the drops are happening on the inside or outside of the house.

Do you have any other fios services? Telephone or TV? Do they have any issues?

I had a problem like this.  Would drop every three minutes.  Switching from wpa to wep security protocol fixed problem.  Note verizon recommends wep (do they know something?).

Since there is more than type of WPA: Which one where you using?

Here are two that I have heard of WPA2-AES, WPA-TKIP.

Note verizon recommends wep (do they know something?).

I am not sure of that. I know that they use WEP by default.

Even if Verizon does recommend WEP, it would be a bad idea to use it if any of the WPA protocols are availible. THe WEP security encoding was cracked 10 minutes after it was officially released as a protocol.

#1 While I know that WEP has been hacked, but it is better than nothing (wide open).

#2 This info below is according to source http://www.grc.com/securitynow.htm

To the best of my knowledge, it is even worse:

a) WEP can be hacked in about 1 to 2 minutes.

b) And to add insult to injury, with FIOS routers, the default key is based upon the SSID.

An user who has download a special web page, can input the MAC Address and find the default WEP key. Not good.
