Download speed slower than my upload speed

My download speed has been between roughly .5-5 mps and my upload speed has been at least twice that (8-10 mps) but when I check on my wife's computer downoad is roughly 22 mps and upload is roughly 24.  So why if we are on the same wireless router is my computer getting such slow speeds?  I just bought a new computer whereas my wife's computer is a few years old.  Please help!

There are to many factors that could mess with your wireless speeds, but the first being the wireless adapter in the computer. The one in your wife's computer is most likely better.

My laptop can get top speeds where as my desktop can't get crap on wireless because of the wireless adapter in it so I have my desktop wired.

I have a Lenovo S510p Touch Laptop.  How can I tell if it is the wireless card?  Even if that were the case, wouldn't it still run consistantly above like 2-3? I have problems with it cutting out because it runs so slow.  Either that is an incredibly poor design for the laptop or something else is at work.

I would suggest that, as a troubleshooting step, you first connect your laptop to your router via Ethernet cable to see what speeds you get that way.

If the wired speeds are much better than WiFi, you may be able to find something in your WiFi configuration that's causing the problem.  If, on the other hand, the speeds are just as slow with a wired connection, that would point in a different direction.

I should mention that I have windows 8.1 while my wife's computer uses windows 7.  After looking around the internet more, it seems that 8.1 might be a potentially problem.

I'm not a Windows 8 kind of guy, but I still suggest you run a few tests with a wired connection to eliminate other issues besides your WiFi hardware and setup.

Come back with the results of a wired test and someone here will probably be able to steer you towards a next step.  Smiley Wink

Check to make sure your wireless card is set to auto on speed and duplex. Go to your wireless card's website and download the latest driver. Run the fios speed optimizer and reboot your laptop and run a new speed test.

I don't know how to check to see if my card is set on auto and duplex.   I checked with connecting through ethernet I got between 56-58 mbps for download and about 39 mbps for upload.  So obviously this is a HUGE discrepency.

Between the fact that you get the speeds you do connected by wire, and the fact that your wife's PC gets much better speeds than you do via WiFi, you've confirmed that you have a problem with the wireless module in your laptop.

The problem could be something in the WiFi settings, or the wireless module could be defective.

Someone who has hands on experience with Win 8 may chime in here with steps to check your WiFi settings, but since your laptop is new and not working properly, you might also consider talking to where ever you bought it from for a replacement.

Good luck.

I would try buying a new wifi adapter. For 20 or 30 bucks you can find out if it's your PC and save yourself a bunch of time. If it's never connected wireless very fast then I'd wonder how far away from the router you are?
