Wondering if anyone else experienced this recently? If so, are there any fixes/workarounds? Thanks in advance.

It would help to know more info like..

#1 The and model of the router.

#2 If you have FIOS TV too or not.

#3 The brand and model of the wired NIC.

#4 Some more details about the network, like:

a) Wired directly to the router.

b) Wired through another device. If so the brand and model of the device that is between your NIC and the router.

#5 If you have separate router router, even if it not connected to anything else. If not connected to any else say separate router but spare.

Yes.  Everyone I know in Westchester County, NY has been having that exact problem since Tuesday 6/9.  Upload speeds drop to near zero for approximately one minute every ten minutes.

I have had two technicians to my house to diagnose and found no issues with my hardware or local connection to Fios.

I use my own router (Netgear Nighthawk R6700), but to diagnose, one of technicians also tested with a Fios router.  I also have tested by hardwiring my desktop computer directly to the Fios ONT box with a brand new Cat6 cable.  The upload speed drop is present in every setup.  I have recorded packet data during an upload speed test while plugged directly into the ONT box and during an upload speed drop and found several retransmission and other packet loss related errors.

I subscribe only to 400/400 internet.  No TV, no phone.

This is a larger Fios network problem that absolutely must be investigated and resolved.

1) G1100

2) No TV, no phone, just Internet

3) Mac Mini 2018 (10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet) - Not sure if answering your question correctly.

4) Wired directly to router

5) Don't have another router to test.

So the issue appears to be beyond the ONT for the OP too? I was going to suggest using their own router. Not to say that they can't since they don't have FIOS TV too, but that is not good/ Rats.

When you did the speed test(s), was it OR at least one of them the Verizon Official Speed testing site?

Because while nothing is guaranteed in terms of speed, they are more like to guarantee their speed testing site. Once the traffic leaves their network, there is less guarantee of speed.

I believe that it is definitely beyond my ONT as my friends and coworkers who are located over various locations are experiencing the same problems at the exact same time. Sometimes the cycle breaks and it happens on the 2,5,8 minute marks but those are very rare. Regardless, others are reporting the same drop at those times as well.

Since the slowdown usually lasts only for a minute, it's very hard to time it with the Verizon speed test as it runs for about 2 minutes before giving a result. On successfully timed tests, the results report failed upload on the device section. Running the test immediately after gave me normal results.

I initially thought it was my hardware that was giving me problems but quickly ruled that out when other people with different hardware setups are reporting the same issue at the same time.

Packet loss every 10 minutes in Westchester for dozens of people.

Message 7 of 16

Hi,

It appears that at least 50 of our users working from home (all on FIOS) are having packet loss every 10 minutes (on the :00 :10 :20 :30 :40 :50 marks pretty much within the first minute) to our network. According to traceroutes and pingplotter graphs, this happens around the alter.net network ranges (eg 152.179.78.154, 140.222.1.61) It has been happening since last week. We have confirmed that other ISPs that take different routes do not have this issue.

We have asked them all to call you and let you know, but of course you make them do the "restart your router" dance and claim you don't see issues with your network.

If anyone at verizon wants to reproduce this packet loss issue, just run a pingplotter (or any packet tracing tool) to just about any lighttower IP: eg 144.121.109.78 (as of this post, seems like all of your FIOS customer packets to that network will go through the problematic hops).

Here is an example traceroute of a packet that has this issue every 10 minutes:

3 B3363.NYCMNY-LCR-22.verizon-gni.net (130.81.29.146) 7.435 ms 1.620 ms 5.590 ms
4 * * *
5 0.ae4.BR2.NYC4.ALTER.NET (140.222.1.61) 3.533 ms 3.797 ms 0.ae1.BR2.NYC4.ALTER.NET (140.222.229.91) 4.393 ms
6 verizon.com.customer.alter.net (152.179.78.154) 4.562 ms 4.137 ms 3.426 ms
7 4.69.209.82 (4.69.209.82) 4.237 ms 4.160 ms 4.69.209.78 (4.69.209.78) 2.240 ms
8 FIBERTECH-N.edge2.NewYork6.Level3.net (4.30.181.126) 3.555 ms 3.749 ms 2.733 ms
9 * * *
10 144.121.109.78.lightower.net (144.121.109.78) 2.317 ms 3.817 ms 3.510 ms

Simple mtr during one of these events:

HOST: <snip> Loss% Snt Last Avg Best Wrst StDev
3.|-- B3363.NYCMNY-LCR-22.verizon-gni.net (130.81.29.146) 0.0% 10 4.3 3.0 0.7 5.1 1.2

You can see the packet loss propagates after alter.net. During any of the other 9 minutes, the mtr reports no packet loss to the destination:

HOST: <snip> Loss% Snt Last Avg Best Wrst StDev

I'll be happy to provide more information, but seriously this is about as easy to reproduce as it gets. Please any network engineer at verizon take a look at this our users are already starting to switch providers because they can't work from home with this issue.

Thank You

I have residential FIOS, and I can confirm the exact same experience in Rockland County.  Examining my own traceroute, the issue appears to be in the same place you indicate (at the hop to alter.net, which is also owned by Verizon).

(partial traceroute to 1.1.1.1 below)

Host................................................Loss% Snt Last Avg Best Wrst StDev
fios_quantum_gateway.fios-router.home...............0.0% 227 54.5 5.1 1.2 107.6 14.5
b3429.nycmny-lcr-21.verizon-gni.net.................0.0% 227 8.1 15.2 3.5 128.7 22.8
0.ae1.br2.nyc4.alter.net............................4.0% 226 17.8 9.0 4.1 121.0 12.7
verizon.com.customer.alter.net......................3.5% 226 6.1 7.4 4.9 77.5 7.6
ae-2.r21.nwrknj03.us.bb.gin.ntt.net.................12.4% 226 7.8 8.4 4.7 129.4 10.5
ae-2.r00.nycmny17.us.bb.gin.ntt.net.................5.3% 226 6.6 8.6 5.5 120.2 11.7

Reporting this through the normal support channels is useless.  As you state, they "make them do the restart your router dance and claim you don't see issues with the network."

I've been dealing with this for over a week.  It makes my VPN connection to my corporate office unstable, which impacts my ability to work from home reliably.  Unfortunately, If Verizon doesn't correct this by this coming weekend, I'll be canceling and going with Optimum.

Fortunately, I am not under contract...

While you can report the issue through normal support channels, consider using social media (like twitter) and using https://www.dslreports.com/forum/vzdirect

I mirror everything the OP says.  All my friends and coworkers on Fios in the NY area are reporting the exact same thing at the exact same time.  Even the odd "off-time" drops.  Yesterday afternoon was especially awful with several "off-time" drops and drops lasting 2-3 minutes instead of one.

And, like the OP, the Verizon speed test takes so long to complete, that if I start it when the speed drops off, the upload section of the test is too late to catch it.  If I manage to time it correctly, I too will have result of "test failed" on upload.  600+ down/0 up.
