Exedingly High ping when downloading at any speed.

I currently have a 15/5 Fios plan. The problem is whenever anyone on the network of 3 computers downloads anything at any speed higher then 500Kb/s the Ping skyrockets to 300+. This can be any download, but in particular we've seen it from Steam and Torrents.

Ping tests from your computer are totally unreliable if measured at the same time your system is under network load.  Not that ping test by themselves mean much.

your speeds are pretty bad with or without pings involved.

So I would do this

make sure you are hardwired.

make sure you are testing at http://speedtest.verizon.net

After the test is done click on the details and cut and paste the fullllll details report.

So then what can I give to see what's going on. Is it normal for one to get almost non functioning connection when downloading at 600kb/s?

running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 2.94Mb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 1.12Mb/s
Information: Network Middlebox is modifying MSS variable
Server IP addresses are preserved End-to-End
Information: Network Address Translation (NAT) box is modifying the Client's IP address

Hubrisnxs may have some suggestions.

Consider doing the FIOS optimizer tool http://my.verizon.com/micro/SpeedOptimizer/FiOS although some find it doesn't help on windows vista and windows 7.

ps; 600 kbs or 600 kBys?  600kBs is roughly 4800 kbs and although low, between the high and low rate you are reporting.

I've already tried running the Optimizer on all the computers on the network.

Those results are awful between your ont and the first verizon server.  May need to contact Verizon if they keep up that way.  IS this being run while also running a torrent?  Note a torrent will use up most of your network capacity and skew a tracert.

Similiar answer to one posted earlier,  Try this

You can try a little trick that worked for me, and I hope it works for you.

What you want to do is release your IP Address in the router.

Then immediately turn off your router.

Leave it off for ten minutes.

After ten minutes turn it back on.

If you turn it back on too fast, then you will probably get the same IP and the same network route.  If you wait long enough you will probably get a new IP and a new route.  It worked for me, but YMMV

From my experience its a long and laborious task to get verizon (any isp for that matter) to work with other network providers, as verizon doesn't have much say in what they do and how they operate their networks.   That might be a final route if my trick doesn't work, but if u need to go that route, i would do the twitter support instead of calling in.

www.twitter.com/verizonsupport

with the problem showing up right at your first hop, then you are in good shape to contact tech support over the phone if you want, but the twitter guys are especially good at helping with a problem like yours.
