I like the plot of signal strength in dB that Inssider provides. Log plots are (for me) more informative since dB measurements are logarithmic. You want to find a channel that gives you the best signal in relation to the other wireless networks. You may see that there is a strong signal on channel 1, but equally weak signals on 6 and 11. In this case, you could select channel 8 or 9 and get 5 MHz to yourself (sort of). You'll probably have to play around with the channel settings since interference from yours or your neighbor's cordless phones, etc., won't show up.

So the lower the db the better the connection or is it vice versa??

The bigger (most positive), the better. You can test it out by just walking up to your router with laptop in hand and watching the signal strength change relative to the other networks.
