I like the plot of signal strength in dB that Inssider provides. Log plots are (for me) more informative since dB measurements are logarithmic. You want to find a channel that gives you the best signal in relation to the other wireless networks. You may see that there is a strong signal on channel 1, but equally weak signals on 6 and 11. In this case, you could select channel 8 or 9 and get 5 MHz to yourself (sort of). You'll probably have to play around with the channel settings since interference from yours or your neighbor's cordless phones, etc., won't show up.
