FiOS is throttling my speed. What should I do?

Well, I am really **bleep** at FiOS. Things were working well when I first got the connection back in 2012. Now, I feel like FiOS is ripping me off with their speed plans. I have 50/25. Wireless performance sucks right of the start and now wired performance sucks as well. All speedtests sites except for the FiOS speed test site show results significantly lower than 50/25. Even if I have 50/25, the downloads, webpage loading, and video streaming are slow as hell. It takes more than 5 minutes just to download a 2MB app on Google Play. Verizon, Why in the world should I be paying hundred dollars a month for a connection slower than DSL?

Have you tried contacting Verizon Tech Support and having them troubleshoot the issue?

Welcome to My HELL! ... I have only had verizon FIOS for the last month and am about 2 days away from saying goodbye! .. I have never dealt with such poor quality service and product ... my speed tests show a wonderful 50 down and 25+ up speeds .. sometimes the down speeds will drop to as low as 20 (which is still great speeds on paper) ... so going from webpage to webpage is nice and fast ... but as soon as you try to stream anything (youtube, hulu, netflix) the fios internet is useless ... called Tech Support .. cant fix the problem .. said they could run diagnostics on my PC .. my PC is top of the line and has never had issues streaming through any other ISP .. also have same problem on Panasonic SMART TV and PS3 using the streaming apps .. BUFFERING! BUFFERING! .. but my speeds still show they are good and strong ... well TECH SUPPORT cant help with that problem because the devices i am using are not their products ..... well the problem is you, so FIX IT!

how is it that i have had several different internet providers (att, cox, twc) and have never had issues .. if i have  15down/5up internet through your competitors, it never buffered even when watching HD content ... but FIOS is all about BUFFERING! ... so they are sending me a new router .. we will see if that helps ... but I doubt it

another thing is my iPhone 5 will connect to the wi-fi, but i only get like 1 down and practically 0.01 up .. basically useless, when the iphone 5 has the higher quality internet chip .. my Verizon iphone, wont work with my Verizon router, which wont work with my Verizon internet! .. amazing product you have VERIZON! .. so now i just use my mobile data on my phone, while in my home .. even though i have unlimited data, it seems to slow down when I surpass 2gb of data and start running the data up ..

I am done with you and ALL of your products! my mobile is due for upgrade and I will be leaving to go elsewhere .. even though i have unlimited data (which i know you throttle my speeds) and will be sending back my TV and phone along with your CRAPPY FIOS product .,.. Im sure its not much to you, but my $300+ per month (mobile/home products) will be spent elsewhere!

EVERYONE is having a problem with your product .. so why dont you ackowledge the problem is on your end and FIX IT!

You see, I've called them many times. They just blame it on my devices that are connected to the FiOS router. Not once, not freaking once did they blame it on their connection.

i am having the same issue - i am currently paying for 50/25 and my internet speed just recently slow down to 3.78/29 upload. I called verizon fios and they blamed it on the fact that I am wireless. I have a wireless n router and the latest macbook pro (retina) with wireless n.  They told me they do not gurantee 50/25 for wireless.. i am spending over $100+ for my internet service and I can't even long in from home.  Throttling - not sure why they would throttle me...

You will not get the full 50/25 over a wireless connection because the n protocol doesn't have enough bandwidth available. Support is right when they claim that the wireless is the potential bottleneck. You need to check it with a wired connection of ideally a Gigabit Ethernet connection. I suggest plugging the MacBook in directly to the Ethernet switch on the router (only the newer revisions of the Actiontec routers have Gigabit Ethernet) and see which results you get. You may want to turn off wireless for the test to make sure that the wired connection is indeed used. If that fails to yield the results you expect then you have a valid case. That said, streaming should still work fine even over wireless. I do it and only run into troubles when the rest of the family starts streaming over wireless at the same time. It just doesn't fit all into the space available.

Been watching this thread because I was experiencing the same, but was able to figure it out.  When I use the FIOS supplied wireless hardware, my speed tests gives me about 30/5 and I'm subscribed to the 75/25 plan.  I'm connecting using 802.11n.  I've tested using my iPhone, iMac and various other devices and it's pretty much the same, up or down a few mb each time but close enough.

When I hardwire my Netgear R6300 wireless and connect via 802.11n using the 5G bandwidth, I consistently get 80/40 ish speeds, meaning in the 80's down and 40's up.  BETTER than the 75/25 I'm paying for.

I was debating whether to keep my R6300 with my new FIOS service vs using the supplied router but when I saw the difference in the speeds, I hid the SSID of the FIOS router and kept my own hardware.

I'm not debating it's a hardware vs throttling problem, I'm of the opinion all ISP's throttle to some extent, even as much as for specific services, but in my case it was definitely the difference in hardware.

My latest speed test was using an iMac on wireless 802.11n 5G (5 ghz bandwidth)

Keep using your NETGEAR for wireless.  ITs way better then even the Verizon MI424WR Version I router.

There are ways to get the F, G and I routers to perform somewhat better.  Make sure to use WPA2 security and if possible turn off compatibility mode for Wireless G devices (you won't be able to if not all your devices support 802.11n or 802.11ac) .  You will never get great speed if your router is a version a to e, or if your device only supports 802-11g or Smiley Frustrated 802-11b Smiley Embarassed

This is not true. I get around 54 mbps down and 39 up on wireless.
