Ok, I bought a new router that has a giganet ethernet port, will I get the giganet speed from verizon?
Also if I request theat the internet comes out of the ethernet port on the ONT is the coax still working?

No, the fastest internet speed offered by Verizon (residential speeds that is) is 50Mbs and then in only a couple areas of NY. Everywhere else the fastest internet speed is 35Mbs.
Gigabit systems are a waste of money unless you are doing internal networking

Not totally true. Typically a Gigabit router will have a Wireless-N connection and so wireless users may see a gain in access speed as wireless-g cannot really get the max out of a high speed connection and also wirelss-n range is better so providing a better signal at distance.

I think you are both correct. But it is true that you can't get gigabit from Verizon FiOS, at least not yet.
