A few times a day, my wife's hardwired laptop drops its connection. It's XP based. We're using the Actiotec 424 router. She can log right back in. She is always in the middle of doing work when it drops. Most of her work is through 3270 sessions(can you believe it!!)

Yes. She works from home three days a week and she has some type of device that allows her into her company network. When it's out, she can't use the internet at all. So I can't test if it's truly the internet drop or not. She's placed many, many calls into her tech support and others don't appear to be having her problem. Being an ex techie, it can be a whole host of things. I've disconnected from the router and connected her directly into the wall. Unfortunatley, that means I have to modem into work!!! But at least that will rule out one component.

Perhaps it is because the router has a small/tiny NAT table?

Does the VPN at your wifes work have an Inactivity Timeout ?
The last time I had to use a VPN it was set up to disconnect me if it did not detect activity. Perhaps the activity within the 3270 Emulator is not registering and the VPN Connection is being severed at the Company end.

She is always doing work when it drops her connection. From the previous comment, what is a NAT table and how do I found out if it's small and if it is, how does one make it bigger?

On the router side, you could take note of your WAN IP address to see if that is frequently changing. If it is, that could be breaking the tunnel. If it isn't, then I'd suspect something on the work side.
The comment by BrianMcD is a good lead. Is there any pattern to the timeouts? Do they occur at a set time from when the last 3270 connection is made? If you periodically ping a work computer (say every 1/2 hour) from your home computer, does she still get disconnected?

I have seen same thing....connection suddenly dropping, like the modem was asking for a new lease on the DHCP. Sometimes it would happen twice an hour, other times twice a day, or something in-between. It might be happening other times too, but I only notice it if I'm in the middle of something when it happens. For me, 6 times in a evening is rather unacceptable.
I'm wondering if it was some hardware problem in my modem, as that modem has now gone to the great internet cloud in the sky. I seriously thinking of going back to the cable company for their internet/TV/Phone package, and seeing if that is more reliable
