Have 25/25, but even after tech visit, can't get above 6/10 - even bought usb wireless-g adaptor!

Just curious if anyone here could be of help.

I signed up for the 25/25, yet was unable to get close to that.Phone support suggested I plug the WAN directly into my ethernet port, but still no 25/25.

A great tech came out and spent quite some time investigating- replaced the router, outside box, etc.

To make a long story short, his netbook was able to get in the mid-20's, but still, my laptop wouldn't get more than 6/10.

He suggested that it was an issue with my nic (sp?) card, and thought maybe a wireless-g usb adapter could help.

So, bought a Netgear WG111v3, and still can't get anywhere close to the speeds I am paying for!

I've spent the past few hours Googling every combination of "what could be limiting my bandwidth speeds" etc, to no avail.

The details:

My Gateway MT6705 is the only computer accessing the modem, although I do have a Slingbox in the system as well.

Drivers are up-to-date, Netgear adapter works, but won't give me the higher speeds.

Anyone have any suggestions for me?

I really don;t want to pay for the 25/25 if I can't use it!

Thanks kindly in advance...

Edit: Oh, and I have run the Fios Optimizer- both phone and tech checked that as well...

Your network adapter parameters may not be set up appropriately for a 25mbps connection. You should try running the Verizon (or similar) high speed Internet optimizer, which modifies several network parameters (such as buffering) to make the best use of the available capacity. In general FiOS users do NOT have issues with performance when using a hardwired connection. There are however all sorts of things on a wireless connection that can impact speed, and have nothing to do with either Verizon or Verizon supplied equipment.

The other suggestion is to run the Argonne National Laboratories speed test, which analysis all aspects of the connection to determine where the bottle necks are located. That is likely to be very enlightening.

I edited my original post - I did run the optimizer and my packet size is 522k.

Ran the test on that link, but have no clue what to do with the results?

It said the slowest link in the network is a 10mbps ethernet subnet. Again, tried to Google, nothing particularly helpful...

Should I be posting this in a computer firum rather than here?

When you plug your computer directly into the router, what speeds do you get? Make sure you've turned off the wireless and enabled the wired before running this test. Also, what kind of nic card to you have? You can check in your network connections folder in control panels.  Right click the wired network connection, and goto properties, and it will tell you what kind of card it is.

You need to look in the details of the test. All that the basic test shows you is the rated speed on the slowest link in the connection chain. There are a number of factors other than link speed that impact actual speed.

I don't believe the 522kb receive window is large enough for a 25/25 connection. I use a 1 mb receive window for 20/5 service.

Anyway you need to look at two other tabs from the speed test. (Statistics and More Details).

As others have pointed out, you are likely to get higher speed with a hardwired ethernet connection.

The problem with wireless is that the 2.4 Mhz band is unlicensed. There are multiple permissible uses, and those other uses like cordless telephones, can indeed interfere with each other, as can your neighbors wireless network if they have one. You might try different wireless channels and see if it makes any difference.

Would it help to post the results of the test?

I know just enough to tinker around, but not really understand the detailed report.

When I use the ethernet cable directly fromthe Actiontec router (with all wireless turned off) I am still not able to surpas 10/6.

I fully understand that other signals, phones, etc can affect speed, but I can't imagine there is so much interference that I am obnly able to get 25% to 40% of 25/25!

Thank you so much to everyone for the help so far, and I hope you'll stick with me until it is resolved!

Thanks again...

And so, the tell tale issue is 4 lines from the bottom.  Your client is using an artificially low buffer size.   Note that is says it limits your bandwidth to about 5Mb/s.

What size/speed did you tell the optimizer you have (or did it tell you that you have)?   A 25/25 is 25000 (if it asks).

Let's start by getting a copy of DrTCP from www.dslreports.com (Tools)

Run it and set the parameters on your ethernet card to:

TcpReceiveWindow: 513920

Path MTU Discovery: Yes

Window Scaling: Yes

Black Hole Detection: No

Time Stamping: No

Max Duplicate ACKs: 2

Selective Acks: Yes

TTL: 48

Dial UP (RAS) MTU: blank

MTU: 1500

Reboot.  Retest. Post your results.   Also post the "Statistics" page from the test.     The only piece of personally identifiable information in the results is the very last line of the "Statistics" page.

Ok, so I DLed DrTCP, double checked that I had all the setting correct, saved then rebooted.

I ran the ANL test again, and:

Thanks for the help to this point, does anyone have any other thoughts based on these results?

Much appreciated!

What version of Windows are you running? What model Wireless adapter are you using? (It may be built in, but you should still be able to tell from Control Panel-->Network Connections-->Properties

I don't know how well either the Verizon or the other tools handler Windows 7 or Vista.

You may have to go to Control Panel -->Network Connection

to alter the configuration of your wireless adapter to get more receive buffers etc.

However some wireless adapter don't seem to offer many configuration options

Anyway it is clear the issue isn't with FiOS..

I am running Windows 7 (32-bit).

My ethernet card is a Marvell Yukon 88E8038 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller - it does offer a variety of "Advanced" options, including receive buffers.

My wireles adaptor is a Realtek RTL8187 Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter - but does not seem to offer the buffer configuration option.

The third-party adaptor I  bought is a Netgear WG111v3, but their tech support did not believe it was an issue with the adaptor settings.

There are some great people here, who I appreciate for helping out so far!

Your continued assistance would be fantastic!
