High Latency on FiOS in New York, NY?

Message 1 of 20

Hi all, Anyone else experiencing issues of high latency on Verizon FiOS as of 7/16/2010 extending through to the present (7pm 7/17/2010)? Since last night I've had nothing but 200ms to 2500 ms pings. Rebooting devices hasn't helped, calling support resulted in them sending me a new modem for next week and rebooting the ON, but as best as I can tell this is a network issue. If anyone else is experiencing trouble, please post so we can get this appropriately escalated. Thanks!

As of around 9pm EST, 7/17/2010 the latency has all but disappeared and pings are back to a stable 10-30ms.

And as of 10:30pm EST the connection quality is once again, horrible. Very high spiking pings... up to 1000ms average 200ms.

No point now. As of early this morning, Verizon had an automated message on their FiOS support line for my zip code detailing a service outage. The high latency was likely due to the outage and things were back to normal (10-20ms) several hours after the estimated time of maintenance completion. So about 24 hours of largely unusable internet, but back to the good quality service today.

Apparently I spoke too soon. Once again this evening, pings spiked back up into the 200ms + range.

Here's a traceroute.

And the saga continues...

4 days now without stable pings. This morning at 6am and for most of the day, pings were pretty low (10-75ms). Post-6pm EST, pings are once again rising into the 200ms range on my 2nd hop (74.108.26.1). Seems like a load problem to me given that off-peak hours are often okay, and once most New Yorkers return home from work in the evenings things fall apart again.

I've called tech support several times now and I believe we are at the "escalated" stage with a network tech/engineer looking into the the problem. That said, I've been expecting a call back for almost 24 hours now. We'll see what they have to say tomorrow.

Anyone else on the Upper East Side of Manhattan out there and having trouble?

1 week later... FiOS tech support has not called me back. I've been expecting a call back since Monday, this issue was first called in 6 days ago. I received a replacement router (non related issue), which of course didn't affect things at all. I'll call again in the morning. Pings have slightly improved late this week evaluating the full span of a 24 hour day, but sporadically pings spike up during peak hours through the evening (say 4am EST) as detailed below... Tracing route to 68.142.120.133 over a maximum of 30 hops 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms Wireless_Broadband_Router.home [192.168.1.1] 2 223 ms 222 ms 387 ms 74.108.26.1 3 186 ms 77 ms 82 ms G5-0-8-1977.NYCMNY-LCR-09.verizon-gni.net [130.81.140.240] 4 17 ms 32 ms 88 ms so-6-0-0-0.NY325-BB-RTR2.verizon-gni.net [130.81.29.236] 5 106 ms 172 ms 97 ms 0.so-4-0-1.XL4.NYC4.ALTER.NET [152.63.10.29] 6 41 ms 68 ms 87 ms TenGigE0-7-2-0.GW8.NYC4.ALTER.NET [152.63.21.129] 7 69 ms 101 ms 176 ms limelightnetworks.customer.alter.net [65.206.122.182] 8 159 ms 147 ms 133 ms tge1-2.fr4.ord.llnw.net [69.28.171.193] 9 122 ms 140 ms 132 ms tge10-1.fr4.dal.llnw.net [69.28.171.241] 10 87 ms 108 ms 110 ms 68.142.120.133 Trace complete. Clearly seems to be something wrong at 74.108.26.1 or a transparent device between.
