How do I connect my LG BluRay DVD to the internet? Can I use a LAN cable to go direct to the nearest settop box (the HD box has a LAN connector) or do I have to go wireless via my router? I prefer the cable as I do not have the wireless option on the DVD. I tried it but it doesn't seem to be configured properly.

No. The RJ45 jack on the STB is not active.
Your options are (in order of preference):
- Run cat5 from the VZ router
- A MOCA bridge: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/15984
- Powerline networking
- Get the wireless adapter for the BD player
