I'm originally from Europe and spent 5 years working in the US on a J1 visa. The visa eventually expired in February 2017 and I returned back home. I made sure to terminate my Verizon contract and and got a phone confirmation from the Verizon customer support that February will be the last bill, that everything is taken care of, and that there are no more open balances. The modem was returned in February as well.
Now 2 years later I've suddenly received a notification from a debt collection agency (EOS-CCA) that Verizon has apparently sold my account to, and they insist that I owe them money.
I logged into my Verizon account to see what's going on, and I found that Verizon apparently continued to charge me for March, April, and May of 2017 even though the account was already closed. The first two months were paid for automatically, but in May my bank account stopped working as well.
The debt collectors now insist that I owe them $34.99 even though Verizon actually already charged me $69.98 too much. I've spent several hours trying to get this fixed, but it always ends up in one of the following ways:
1) Phone or Chat: Verizon representatives can't access the account details and forwards me to the financial department.
2) Financial Department: The automated voice messaging system asks me for my account number.
2a) Incorrect or no account number => "You need a correct account number, please call back when you have it"
2b) Correct account number => "Your account is owned by EOS-CCA. We will forward you to their number"
3) When calling EOS-CCA they know nothing of the details and they insist that I owe them money.
I don't know what else to do, and the customer service has run out of ideas as well. Please let me know how to fix this and ideally also how to remove whatever effects this would have on my credit history.
The above website can better assist you. First off send a certified return receipt letter to the collection agency and Verizon billing stating why it is not a valid debt. Also contact the three credit bureaus to have it removed off of your credit reports. If you have proof of the account closed as you state it will be easy to correct.
make sure you can prove the account was closed. Additionally I would contact your bank or credit card company and do a charge back for any months you were charged after your confirmation email of the account closed.
As this is a peer to peer support forum, you will need to contact Verizon directly for assistance. We have sent you a private message with contact information for a dedicated specialist who is able to help with a resolution of your issue.
