How to use router to log activity on ports?

I am having problems with incoming traffic on ports 143 and 110 - it is working on and off (see my other post).  I have narrowed it down to one of two issues - Verizon service or the Verizon Router.  In order to elliminate the router as the cause I would like to turn on monitoring on the router so I can see if it is getting these requests - for example a connection on port 143 when I open an IMAP connection.  I have looked at the monitoring options on the router and I can't see how to turn on logging for a port, or report on the activity on a port.  Can anyone advise on how to do this?  Thanks.

I believe that the Actiontec does not support that level of control. For that you would have to use a network monitoring software. I have used Ethereal in the past and it allows you to define specific interface, traffic type and port selection. I've never used Wireshark but assume it should do something similar.

Wireshark and Ethereal are the same product.  The old name was Ethereal and new versions are now called Wireshark.
