Intermittent no Internet on 2.4GHz, 5GHz works - Fios-G1100 requires reboot

I've been having an issue with my 2.4GHz network for the past few weeks where the Internet drops, but Internet from the 5GHz experiences zero issues.  The 2.4GHz always advertises the SSID, I can connect to it, get an IP lease, but computers/phones/tablets/etc... show "no Internet".  Internal home network communication between the 2.4GHz and 5GHz devices seems to not be affected.  If I reboot the G1100 router, Internet access from the 2.4GHz network is restored.

Adding to the confusion I can ping external IP addresses and names while connected to the 2.4GHz network.

I do notice in my router logs that it looks like I recently received a firmware update to 02.03.00.09 on May 6th.  I had zero issues prior to this.

Is the firmware suspect, or should I be looking at something else?  I need to get this resolved as of course, it always happens at the worst time..... not that there is ever a good time.

If you can ping external IP addresses, you should have Internet. Some devices use the ping result to 8.8.8.8 to determine whether there is an Internet connection.

One thing I could think of is the Self-Organizing Network (SON). If you have it on, turn it off. It does more harm than good. I don't like its way of steering clients onto 5GHz by deteriorating working 2.4GHz connections.

The thing to consider is that "ping" is only testing connectivity at the network layer.

SON is not turned on.

Are there any logs on the 1100 that I can view to see real time traffic to include source and destination ports to see if something is being dropped?

A successful ping shows more than network layer is normal. Since the router has NAT/PAT, a successful ping would also imply the NAT/PAT is fine, which operates on layers 3 and 4.

You can enable Firewall blocked connection attempts logging at Firewall > Security Log > Settings. Then back to the Security Log to view the recent entries. If you find the web interface is too unwieldy to use, you can SSH into the G1100 and download the logs directly into a file on your computer.

Since you seem to know quite a lot about networking, I assume you know how to use SSH. Just login to the SSH session using the same username and password and cd /mnt/log You will see a bunch of local*.* files. Firewall is local5.*, open that with less command or download to your machine.

You can follow my earlier post to do that. https://forums.verizon.com/t5/Fios-Internet/Fios-Internet-drops-10-20-times-a-day-Requires-manual/m-...

64~ hours after a reboot, and Internet from 2.4GHz is hosed once again.  Internal 2.4 and 5 networks can still communicate with each other, and 5GHz continues to have zero issues accessing the Internet.

I enables SSH on the router, but get "connection refused".  Maybe I need to reboot my router to fully enable?  Nothing abnormal in the web gui logs on the router.

I did do a port query to ports 80 and 443.  Interestingly enough, it returned "listening".

Why are you checking forums.verizon.com?

You should be checking either your LAN or WAN.

For the WAN side, any web based port checker ( ex https://www.grc.com/port_22.htm and click on Probe This Port )

For the LAN side, a port checker and be sure to target your LAN IP of the NAT router. That is called Default Gateway on most OSes (ex Windows. Unix/Linux/BSD) / systems (ex PS4).

Seems to be called Router on Mac/Apple - REF https://portforward.com/networking/static-Mac10.4.htm Since I don't have Mac/Apple, I can not say if that is true or not.

I used forums.verizon.com as an example.  We're all here right?  🙂

As stated in my first post, LAN side is completely fine for 2.4GHz network.  2.4GHz advertises, authenticates, issues IP's, talks with other 2.4GHz clients, as well as wired and 5GHz clients.  The problem is Internet for 2.4GHz clients.

I haven't posted, but I discovered last night that there's a few people on reddit r/fios with G1100 wifi problems since the last update.  Someone (I assume with connections to Verizon) stated it's a known problem and they're either going to roll back to .08 or release a new firmware.

Can you go to G1100's Firewall and Security Logs to see whether there's a defragmentation error on the 2.4G wireless interface?

You can technically roll back the firmware yourself. Go to https://192.168.1.1/#/advanced/fwrestore and load back the 08 firmware.

#1 Since there are both pros and cons, what is/are the con(s) to doing that?

#2 If I understand everything correctly, there is nothing to prevent Verizon from re-updating the firmware *1.

#3 If that not correct, please correct me.

#4 As long as the OP does not have FIOS TV too, then they are welcome to use their own NAT router - connected directly to the ONT and not use Verizon's NAT router.*2

Please and thank you

*1 Expect for the OP using their own NAT router.

*2 expect may for support from them.

[EDIT] Fixed spelling mistake and at least grammar.

Thank you!  I'll be rolling back my firmware the first time I have an opportunity.  I had no idea that option was there!

As far as my logs go, no, nothing in the logs indicating any kind of error.  I had the 2.4 problem yesterday, but only had a few minutes to troubleshoot because I was working.  Wireshark showed a lot of retransmits and duplicate acks, but I didn't have time to dig in and investigate further.

I still can't SSH to my router for some reason even though I enabled it.
