Internet download speed going down at certain times?

Ok i went to tech support yesterday about this problem and they are sending me a new router but I am not so sure its a router problem. Ill describe the problem.

I have 25/25 mbps internet. Yesterday at around 7pm EST and today at about the same time my download speed started going extremely slow. Normally I get over 25mbps but when it gets slow it goes to about 8 or lower. This is very weird because it goes slow until about 10pm and goes back to normal. Its obviously not my computers because its optimized for fios and the speed is normal most of the time. I also tested it on other computers in my house and I get the same speeds. The upload speed is the same as well. I was thinking of maybe some neighbor hacked into my network but thats not the case, I see no wireless entries, I have WPA 2 security and I have mac address filtering. Can this really be a bad router issue?

It may be that during peak hours they move you to a secondary Gateway router that is not configured properly.

We had a problem with that here in Southern California last summer. It took several months to get it taken care of but it did get straightened out.

Try running a couple of tracerts. One when everything is working good and another when it gets slow. Then post them here and that way we can get an idea if it is something on the network.

If you dont know how to do a tracert, here are the instructions (for windows) ***Note for the advanced users. I know this is a rather round about way of getting to the command prompt but it works for all verisons of windows so its good for the novice.

Press the "windows key" + "R" on the keyboard. You will get the "run" box.   Type in CMD then press OK

A black window will open up

Type in

tracert www.google.com

hit Enter

(You can enter what ever website you want other than google if you want to. It doenst matter but google is a good test bed)

Then post the results here.

THIS is after I got my new replacement router, I am pretty sure its not a problem in my lan. This is obviously a problem that needs to be fixed by verizon in their isp centers or whatever.

I contacted verizon again and told them to tell the engineers about my problem because it might be something wrong in their network. I even tried replacing their router with a new one that then sent me, not any difference. It can't be a coincidence that my speed goes down at certain times. My download speeds are slow now too, Its only 5:30 PM EST not even 7 yet. WTH! If this continues into next week ill tell them to send a tech but I am sure hes gonna come at a time when my speed is normal and not find anything wrong with my connection.

That looks like the problem right there. At hop 3 it looks like it is routing you down to TAMPA then back to NEWARK. In the first tracert where everything is OK. The Verizon network stays in NEWARK. However in the sencond Tracert, the Verizon network starts in NEWARK, goes to TAMPA, then comes back to NEWARK again. That trip down the east coast would definatly hurt the DL speeds.

You need to start by calling Tech support. And ask them to refer it to the network techs. I know this is not likely to get very far but it is where you need to start.
