Internet keeps disconnecting and reconnecting.

Hello

I have Verizon fios, and my internet keeps disconnecting and reconnecting immediately, over a 10 minute period, many times a day.

I am not wireless. Im directly connected to my router.  It seems to happen at the same time each day, lately its been getting worse, it will happen about 3-4 times a day .  It will start disconnecting, then reconnect, every minute or so, for about 10 minutes.

Ive contacted verizon over the phone, they kept saying to check my router and wire (which I did, and everything seems to fine), after a while on the phone with them, they just hung up on me.  I checked my router, wire, computer, and everything is fine there.

Can anyone help me? This is beginning to be a major issue.

Please help

I am not sure, but let us check some stuff...

#1 In your router go to Home -> DHCP

The screen of your router may look something like the screen at http://support.dlink.com/emulators/di604/h_dhcp.html

a) What is the Starting and Ending IPs? Default seems to be 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199

b) What is the lease time? Default seems to be 1 Week.

#2 In your router, go to Advanced -> Filters.

Are you using any sort of filter (IP, MAC, URL, Domain)?

#3 In your router, go to Tools -> Misc.

a) Is UPnP enabled?

b) Is Gaming mode enabled?

#4 Not in the router screens, questions..

a) How many computers total do you have behind this router?

b) If you have any game consoles, do you have at least two of them? For example of game console(s): X-Box, Wii, Playstation.

c) If you know: Was this router provided by your ISP or (did you go out and buy it)?

#5 In your router go to Tools -> Firmware. What firmware are you on?

#6 In your router, go to Status -> Device Info. You see/saw the external IP that you see/saw at http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

-Yes, starting and ending IPs are defualt

b) What is the lease time? Default seems to be 1 Week.

-Yes, it is default, 1 Week.

#2 In your router, go to Advanced -> Filters.

Are you using any sort of filter (IP, MAC, URL, Domain)?

-It seems as if the IP selection is highlighted.

#3 In your router, go to Tools -> Misc.

a) Is UPnP enabled?

-Yes

b) Is Gaming mode enabled?

-Yes

#4 Not in the router screens, questions..

a) How many computers total do you have behind this router?

-Just this One, and I am hardwired to the router.

b) If you have any game consoles, do you have at least two of them? For example of game console(s): X-Box, Wii, Playstation.

-There is a 1 Wii in this household, but it remains unplugged at all times.

c) If you know: Was this router provided by your ISP or (did you go out and buy it)?

-I beleive this router is store bought.  Separately.

#5 In your router go to Tools -> Firmware. What firmware are you on?

-"Current Firmware version 2.42"  "Firmware date; March 31, 2004"

#6 In your router, go to Status -> Device Info. You see/saw the external IP that you see/saw at http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

-Yes, I see my router model in that list.

I am having the same problem. I use a VPN to communicate with my corp. (I'm in Northern VA) and the VPN has been dropping many times throughout the day. It worked fine for 2 years and a few months ago it began to drop. I've tested it on another PC and have the same issue, so it's a network problem.

I just called tech support and they basically told me to go away. They don't support VPNs, they don't support another router behind theirs, and the support guy asked me if I could access anything on the Internet, and when I said yes, he said "then it's not our problem."

Sheesh. Guess it's time to go back to cable for internet access. Ugh.

I was having this exact symptom for weeks and it was driving me crazy! However, I did find the problem and a solution and maybe it will benefit others as well.

Problem: I had added another device that had a static IP that conflicted with my router's IP.

Solution: In my case, I changed the other devices static IP, but you could also set the other device to use DHCP (best) or change the Verizon device IP.

This can occur for a variety of reasons, but the most common is when you add another router (like a wireless router). Another common cause is that another device on your LAN is running a DHCP server, and since the Verizon router is expecting to be the sole DHCP server they can server the same IP #s out. I've had many cases where a Windows machine just magically started serving DHPC requests, and all versions of Windows I've tested for some reason have the DHCP server running by default!

Hope this helps!

I was supplied a D-Link router when my FIOS Internet was first installed in 2005, and it was replaced when the FIOS TV was installed. Verizon no longer supplies that router. I would call tech support and explain your problem. They can send you a newer router at no cost, and provide a return label to ship the old one back through UPS. When my TV was installed they just left the old router because the tech said they didn't use them anymore. But they usually request you send a bad device back or be billed for it. Call tech support and request a new router.
