Having the exact same issues in Tampa, glad I found this post, seems there is an obvious issue.

Yes. This is a paying customer of Verizon FIOS from MA. This problem can be confirmed from here too. The youtube is unuseable sometimes, especially at night peak time. The only way to get around it is to use a proxy server, which streams and caches a 720p video within minutes, but use FISO directly, it stops and suspends almost every 2 minutes. Verizon, fix it NOW!!!

the only thing we can do is make a big stink?

how?

verizon doesn't even let us, its customers report problems to its own customer support via e-mail, as far as I can tell.

to comlain, i must call the level1 tech support and explain why their network isn't working.

i've been in IP networking for 20 years and i can't tell them exactly why, not that they would listen anyway.

i'm sure they'll tell me to clear my cache and restart my router 🙂

the fact that i wrote code for IP routers and other IP equipment for many years will not impress them, they'll still need me to install internet explorer 🙂

what i suspect is happening is some genious at Verizon wanted to same money (always a good idea) and deployed some network optimization / video caching equipment.

it could be a solution from someone like bytemobile, flash networks, etc. who knows?!

obviously there are times where this equipment doesn't quite work as advertized.

possible reasons are plentiful. misconfiguration, overload, etc.

when it fails to work, youtube stalls to a grinding halt for me.

what do I do?

i just try a few open proxies and usually i can find one in a few minutes that works well.

then i go ahead and download everything i need (say a few episodes in advance) using youtube downloader.

then i watch using something like mplayer without having to worry about the stupid flash or html5 player that's trying to "optimize", smart network gear that's trying to "optimize" and all this other "just in time" and "improve end user experience" mumbo jumbo that is about as reliable as windows 95 on a rainy day.

service provides always want to provide . . . hmm . . . "service". see that guy on the right that's supposed to answer your troubles? the flashy robot fella? that's SERVICE!

and consumers always want just connectivity and no **bleep**.

eventually consumer wins, one way or another, but it will probably take centuries in the US, as this market is essentially a regulated duopoly.

what can I do?

i can remain on the lowest possible plan and not upgrade.

every time verizon wants me to pay more to upgrade I ask them . . . will my youtube actually work any better if i upgrade or will I still have to search for open proxies and jump through hoops?

ok. i'm not upgrading, thank you very much. let me know when you fix youtube and then i might consider it.

same goes for other "service" providers.

for now, for those that want to be able to view vids, copy the video url without any "feature" nonsense, and paste it into proxyfree.

Glad I found this. I'm in Tampa and have been having problems for months loading anything on Youtube. Don't why I'm paying for fiber when youtube loads slower than a 56k modem connection. This is crazy!!! My AT&T phone is the only device in my house that can watch a youtube video right now.

Experienced this tonight (California) and its very aggravating. I also couldn't watch Fios TV through my Xbox 360 without it constantly buffering so i don't know if its just a youtube thing.  Defnitely going to watch this more and if it happens regularly I will be calling a lot.

So Verizon is letting YouTube (and other Google services?) degrade as well as Netflix.

What is the point of having FiOS again?

In a very thorough story that explains why there are a lot of issues with the slowing down of people's internet speeds with  their ability to stream content it was revealed the real reason why youtube and other websites like netflix are often difficult to use. To no one's surprise it is all about money and a behind the scenes power play where isps are seeking to intimidate anyone who does not adhere to what they are commanding them to do. Even if you ugrade to the highest internet speed of what an isp has to offer that will make no difference at all since this is all about how much money an isp is willing to pay to a company so their customers can have access to the content that is offered by them. For more details about the history of these kinds of disputes including the most recent one google "why youtube buffers" and click on the ars technica link. It is 4 pages long but it provides a great deal of information as to what is going on behind the scenes.

No one from Verizon has responded to this thread AT ALL yet?

What a joke.

I just got FiOS 75/35 switching over from Comcast 25/5 and I cannot watch YouTube videos in HD at all. If the video does buffer to HD, the video ends itself automatically and will not allow itself to reload. I never had this problem on Comcast. I have not experienced the Netflix problem yet, but if this continues unresolved as it has over these months for many of you I will simply go back to Comcast. This is beyond preposterous.
