I don't believe Verizon has such a program. I've honestly never heard of any cable provider having one because unlike power and water, cable and Internet is not considered a necessary utility. There are other options such as an HD antenna, cheap cell phones for internet such as Straighttalk, movies from redbox, etc... Sure fios is nice to have, but in my opinion if you both really lost your jobs and are struggling a lot you should focus whatever money you have on the more important things.

Don't take this as a fact because I'm really not sure, but I believe cable companies have a very low level service that basically contains only local channels and again I could be wrong, but most local municipalities require such service for emergency purposes. I remember years ago TWC had such a service that complied with local wishes.

Good luck because I know it can be hard being without information when times are hard.

This is correct, but prices are another thing as it can vary on location. You have to call Verizon for very basic service. Why pay for that when you can use an atenna for free for the same channels though?

First, call Verizon and ask.

That said, normally, only a basic phone service (local calls only) called Lifeline is ever provided at a discount for low income people through government assistance.  This might not help you if you have a FIOS bundle, but you could potentially have it applied to a cell phone bill instead. You probably should not expect a premium service such as FIOS internet and TV to give a similar discount.

You could also potentially downgrade to the most basic Verizon packages to save money, but there may be penalties for doing so if you are still in a contract at a higher level of service.  Run the numbers for all potential less expensive options such as switching providers to basic cable bundles, DSL, etc.  Other companies such as Comcast may offer a low income discounted basic plan.

Most 'basic' packages contain local warning systems and weather radars/channels that are deemed saftey issues and are therefore contained within the basic package.

However, you are correct...Why not install a small HD antenna...Unless you are in a frenge area.

However, I believe the OP will probably have an option, but will require specific questions and a fee.

Not all areas in the US are close enough to towers to receive signals from antennas. Also, people who live in apartment buildings cannot attach their own antennas to their landlord's buildings. I live in Buffalo NY area, well known for being blacked out when everything went digital.  So antennas are not an option.
