Whenever the phone rings, if we answer on the cordless we lose our WiFi connection on the laptop and/or XBox. The router is on a different floor than the phone and other devices.

What you are experiencing is something rather normal. There are a few things you can try.
Thecordless phone you have is 2.4 Ghz phone and you can replace it with a 5 Ghz phone
The next option is to go into the router and under wireless settings from the top choose basic security settings on the left and then option 3 is channel. If its on auto try one of three channel 1, 6, 11. Set the channel to one of these and see if the problem occurs stil and report back the results.

Better still go to DECT 6.0 phone which uses 1.9 GHz. It therefore doesn't interfere with any of the frequencies commonly used by wifi.
