Losing internet service every 2 hours

I've been having trouble with this ever since I got my FiOS installed.. It seems that every 2 hours on the dot, my connection drops for roughly 20 seconds and disconnects me from anything that I'm connected to. It appears to be caused by the router renewing the DHCP lease every 120 minutes.. Is there anyway I can prevent the router from disconnection from the internet when it tries to renew the DHCP?

I had the same problem after I got my new Fios service. Disappointed about the customer service as they could not figure out the problem. After seeing this post I tried the method of disabling uPnP and it works for my G1100 router. Thanks!

what worked for me, and allowed me to maintain a stable connection was disabling uPnP on the router ... it was conflicting with some of my peripherals (router would DC when i would scan docs to the computer, etc) ...

hope this helps!

#1 What is the brand, model, and hardware version of this router?

For example..

Actiontec, MI-424-WI, Rev C.

#2 I know you FIOS Internet, but I have to ask: Do you have FIOS TV, too?

Checking through the settings on my router, it appears that Verizon provides only a 2 hour lease for my FIOS connection. (It's probably the same for everyone unless you have a static IP).

As a result, you will see that your router log will show a new connection to the Internet every two hours if you are actively using the connection.  Overnight, I'll see a new connection and then no new connections are logged until I start using the Internet again the next morning.

I don't have any idea why Verizon limits the lease to 2 hours (my other services had pretty much unlimited leases) unless it is to update and reissue IP addresses. That way if someone is inactive for a long period of time, the IP address can be free'd up and given to someone else that is active.  (a way to manage IP address distribution).

Bob: In theory, the router should be renewing the lease once an hour to avoid interruption. If it's not happening it might be worthwhile to give the router a factory reset to see if that's the case. I do find it strange how your router shows no signs of renewing the lease until you start to use the connection again, as if you have FiOS TV the Set Top Boxes need Internet access.

I don't experience any interruption while using the Internet.  I think my router's log just doesn't show an entry for a renewal other than the connect message every two hours.

I'm not using the Verizon-supplied router. I'm using a Netgear 3700 dual band N router as I like having the 5 Ghz band for wireless. Less interference there, doesn't drive my cordless phone bonkers and all of my neighbors are using the 2.4 Ghz band.

I'll have to look at the logs a little closer, but it looked like there was a long gap last night with no new connect log entries.

Either way, the router log is going to show an entry for each time the lease is renewed and I suspect that's what the Original Poster was seeing in his logs.

By the way, I do not have FIOS TV.

hey otter, i had the same issue that you did with the router, very frustrating ...

what worked for me, and allowed me to maintain a stable connection was disabling uPnP on the router ... it was conflicting with some of my peripherals (router would DC when i would scan docs to the computer, etc) ...

hope this helps!
