For the past few days, I've been sufering from unusably high ping times. Here's a sample traceroute:

I've tried rebooting PC, router, and ONT. The high latency occurs whether pinging from the PC or the router. As you can see, the problem appears to be between my home and the first IP on the list, which places it squarely within Verizon's network.

Do you know if any computer or device plugged into your network is running bandwidth-heavy programs, for example, P2P programs? That latency looks like something is tying up your upload. It's a good idea to start off by looking at the lights on your router while the connection is idle. If you see a light, such as Wireless, Coax, or Ethernet flashing nonstop while a ping test shows high latency, bandwidth usage is a good possibility. Also, do you know if any of your neighbors are seeing issues?


Doesn't hurt to run malware scans on the network, in the event that bandwidth usage is causing your high latency.


Failing that, call Verizon / Verizon's Fiber Solutions Center for help. They'll need to check your signals and the circuit as a whole.

I have one computer connected, and the latency was the same when I turned the computer off and executed a ping from my phone's command prompt.


The network usage on my router didn't show anything clogging it up.


The problem went away on its own. If it occurs again, I'll call the Fiber Solutions Center. Thanks!
