Modem Purchase

Can I purchase a modem for Verizon FiOS?  I am renting one and wanted to see if it was cheaper to just buy one?

FiOS doesn't use a modem, but you can buy a router.

(I say the latest and greatest a little tongue-in-cheek.  I don't have one yet, and from what I've read so far on the forum, I'm not going to spring for one soon.)
