My IP address changed

I just noticed that my IP address has been changed without my doing anything.  Is this something Verizon does automatically?  I had the same IP address for 4 years, and it seemed to have changed just recently.

It's not a big deal-but I am curious as to how and why it was changed.

Residential accounts are assigned Dynamic IP addresses. That means your IP address can change at any time, since you aren't statically assigned.

When your IP lease expires, your router requests a new one from Verizon's servers. If the same one is available (which it *usually* is, but not always), then you will generally be re-assigned the same IP. When it isn't available for whatever reason, you get a different one.
