My laptop won't connect!!! Please help.

My Asus laptop, just stopped connecting to my home network. When I try to reconnect, it just cycles through the connection process but never stays connected. 

Here's the kicker, everything else in my house is connected and working fine. Smart phones, tablets and other computers.

Here's the other kicker. My laptop is able to connect to other networks just fine. I am at my moms house and posting this on my laptop. I have verizon fios and I already called them, they fixed the problem for 2 days then it came back.

I tried restarting the router, doing a complete network restart and all my drivers are up to date. So I about to blow my brains out!!! Please help!

I'm sorry but you don't state HOW you connect the ASUS laptop to your SOHO LAN.

Ok, WiFi.

The notebook should also have an Ethernet port.  I'd like you to connect the ASUS via wired Ethernet to your Router.

If you get an IP address and are able to access the Internet for several minutes without disruption, I want to to to find the Wifi connection management utility, find the line item that connects your notebook to your Router and delete that connection setup.  You can identify that connection setup by the SSID name associated with your Router.

Once you have that connection setup removed, I want yout re-establish a WiFi connection to your Router and see if youy get a consistent connection.

This has happened quite a few times in my household over the past couple of years.  The problem is when Verizon updates the Mocha box and your settop box, the router has difficulty communicating with the MOCHA (Mocha is the box on the wall outside of your house) and resets itself to the factory default.  If you have changed the original SSID or passphrase your wifi connections are now all broken.

**NOTE: Before doing the below - ensure that your wireless is turned on.*** You don't know how many clients have brought their laptops to me because they can't get the internet and I find that the wireless is turned off.  A quick $10.00 for my trouble and a learning situation for the client.  All laptops do this differently - some have a physical switch, while others require a combination of keys, for instance, My wifes Lenovo Idea pad has a switch, while my Dell requires me to press fn and F7 at the same time.

Turn off your router and restart your computer.  When they are both powered back up check your wireless connection.  If you are connected - hurray.  If not, follw the below torubleshooting procedures which have been taken right out of the Verizon FIOS Tech support playbook....I have had to do this quite a few times in the past few years.

***I should say that Verizon FIOS is still the best by far when comparing it to other services.  And a big shout out to one particular Technician for going over and beyond for the client - {edited for privacy} Pomona, CA - You are the very best***  Sorry, just had to do it. Back to business....

The fix is:

1.)  Reset your mocha box.  Inside the house somewhere is a box mounted which is your "Battery Backup".  Locate the box and open it.  Inside you will find a rather large battery.  There is a green connector on wires coming from the battery to the box - disconnect for 15 seconds.

2.)  Reconnect the green connectors.

3. ) While router is powering up, connect the computer to the router via lan cable.

4.)  Try to connect to the internet

         a.)  You are connected - no further action

         b.)  You are not connected - move to next step

5.)  In the addressbar of your browser, type "192.168.1.1" without the quotes and press enter.  This will bring you to the router sign-in page.  Sign in and click on the wireless settings tab.  Make note of the SSID and the passphrase weather it is WEP or WPA and what encryption you are using (PSK or AES).

6.)  In the lower right hand corner (Called the Task Tray) there should be a wireless icon, left click on the icon and click Network and Sharing.  Find your wireless connection and right  click it.  Click Properties and check that your connection settings are correct (SSID and passphrase).

7.)  Go back to Network and settings main page.  Where it shows your wireless connetion - on the right hand side where it says access type, find and click on wireless settings - Pop-Up window should appear.  Click properties and another Pop-Up window should appear.  In the scroll box - scroll to :Internet Protocol ver 4 (TCIP/IPV4) and click once to highlight and click properties - ensure "Obtain IP Address Automatically" is checked.  Close all windows.

8.)  If none of this worked - You need to call Verizon FIOS Tech support because most likely a tech is going to be necessary to further troubleshoot your issue.

No offense but I strongly suggest you understand the terminology and equipment used with FiOS so if you do give information you won't confuse the person you are trying to help with misinformation

 

MoCA - (not mocha which is a coffee like/based beverage or is a Java decompiler [software]) - Multimedia over Coax Alliance

"Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) is a trade group promoting a specification they have developed that uses coaxial cables to connect consumer electronics and home networking devices in homes. It allows both data communication and the transfer of audio and video streams."

 

So "MoCA" is not the box outside one's house. The "box on the wall outside of your house" is the Optical Network Terminal which basically is a type of bridge that converts the data flow from an optical cable to two media types.  One is a simple twisted-pair copper wire that consists one's standard telephone wiring (aka Plain Old Telephone System or POTS).  The other is either RG6 Coaxial Cable (which uses the MoCA standard) or Category 5 or preferably Category 6 (aka; CAT 5 or CAT 6) unshielded twisted-pair Ethernet cable.

In your reply when you say "The fix is:" you are talking about the ONTpower supply.  The power supply converts Alternating Current (AC) to Direct Current (DC) which is used to power the ONT.  However it also contains sealed Lead-Acid 12 volt DC battery used if the AC supply fails and is "trickle charged" when the AC is properly working.

 

In your "fix" you are talking about disconnecting both the AC supply and battery such that no power is is sent to the ONT and when the battery is reconnected and the AC is reapplied the ONT is forced into powering down and the powering up in a kind of "ONT reset".

 

The thing about that idea is if the Router loses Wide Area Network (WAN) or Internet connectivity then a reset of the ONT may help.  However if the Router does have WAN or Internet connectivity and the Ethernet ports work but there is a problem with Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) connections then resetting the ONT will not help.
