Details are still unclear but it seems like streaming will improve. Here is the link.

Streaming may improve for Netflix.  What about Youtube and the thousands of other video streaming sites?

The question is: Is this good news or bad?

My sense is it is some of both.

The good: individuals wanting to watch Netflix material in HD will (hopefully) now be able to do so. So this is good news for consumers, at least for the short term.

The bad: presumably a large sum of money is going to be transferred from Netflix to Verizon.  This will do several things:

1. Increase Verizon's voracious appetite for more profits and embolden Verizon management to become even more monopolistic

2. Drive down Netflix's revenues, with the ultimate effect of increasing their users' monthly subscription fees

3. Drive another nail in the coffin of Net Neutrality which could ultimately result in the death of the Internet as we now know it

4. Scare smaller startup content providers from developing their own high-bandwidth data streams

5. Increase general skepticism that US gov't regulators can in fact do anything to improve overall Internet experiences for the general population

So - is this a Pyrrhic victory?

Once HD streaming from Netflix is restored for Verizon subscribers I will reactivate my Netflix account even if it costs a few $ more per month.

The good news for Verizon is I will also be sending a few more $ per month their way once the VMS1100 and IPC1100 media servers are available to rent for Upstate NY subscribers.

It's a win-win-win for Verizon-Netflix-&-optivity. Man Very Happy

Is YouTube still shoddy? I remember it being TERRIBLE last summer, but since then I've seen little to no issue with the site. Even though I'm on DSL I can get 1080p to play without an issue these days. Before I couldn't play 360p without waiting for minutes. For at least in my case, it seems like Verizon and Google beefed up network capacity to each other to better handle loads.

Not that I am aware of. Of all of the problems Verizon has these days, YouTube legitimately doesn't seem to be one of them. Verizon uses Google Global Cache servers these days.

What's strange is that for some of us, Netflix and YouTube have never been "shoddy." Not sure what the differences are/were. Glad that the Netflix issues should be resolved for everybody that was experiencing issues though.

Time of day matters too. The most common time for issues is roughly between 7pm and 11pm (longer in some areas).

If you do most of your streaming at other times of the day then you might not have noticed much.

Yeah prime time, but location, location, location!   Seemed like most of the problem areas were on the two coasts.   I never had any real issues in Dallas.
