Yeah I am still supporting mainframe as well as lotus here where I work.

I didn't see where anybody mentions the settings on the computer (NIC ?) for length of time to remain connected with no activity, isn't that still a possibility ?

It could be but unlikely, the default time is 30 to 60 minutes. And he is talking about as little as a 10 second timeout.
